Background / History
Rhaenyra is King Viserys's eldest daughter and designated heir. Her position is continually undermined by political pressure to marry, her father's reluctance to grant her practical authority, and the growing influence of Queen Alicent's faction. She fears marriage and childbirth in part because of her mother's repeated pregnancies and miscarriages. 23 79
She first reconnects with Aemon at the Red Keep after a long separation. She brings him to the Dragonpit, introduces him to dragon eggs and Syrax, and gradually becomes his closest companion and political ally. 13 17 23
During her royal tour to seek a husband, Rhaenyra slips away to the Vale to visit Aemon. There she uses Syrax's dragonfire and the labor of the Fire Smith Tribe to help construct the mountain route later named Vale Road. 92 101
Her experience in the Vale changes her from an uncertain heir into an active dragonrider. She joins the campaign against the Mountain Clans, learns the value of dragonfire in war, and develops greater confidence in her own political and military role. 82 96 149
After refusing proposed matches with Laenor Velaryon and others, Rhaenyra openly chooses Aemon. Their engagement is formalized in an Ancient Valyrian blood ceremony on Dragonstone, followed by a dragon dance between Syrax and Vermithor. 137 177
Appearance
Rhaenyra is a petite, strikingly beautiful young woman with the distinctive Valyrian features of House Targaryen. Her appearance is repeatedly noted as exceptionally refined and nearly flawless. 13 158
- Silver-gold hair and violet eyes. 13
- Fair skin and delicate features. 13
- Often wears fitted black dragonriding attire rather than elaborate court gowns. 13 17 163
- Favors ornate jewelry, including ruby-set ornaments and a dragon-patterned necklace. 17
- Uses a black-and-red gown to publicly emphasize her Targaryen identity during the tourney that marks the division between Black and Green. 138
Personality
Rhaenyra is affectionate, impulsive, and initially prone to melancholy when she feels isolated or politically powerless. She cherishes freedom, dragonriding, and the time she spends away from the Red Keep, but struggles with the responsibilities attached to being heir. 16 33 95
She grows more resolute through campaigning and political conflict. Rather than remain an ornamental heir, she insists on acting as a dragonrider, confronts hostile lords directly, and challenges Viserys when she believes the royal family is acting from weakness. 164 187 205
Despite her hostility toward Alicent, Rhaenyra shows a capacity for magnanimity. She offers Alicent's children access to dragon eggs and young dragons, believing that as the eldest sister and heir she should act with a clear conscience. 187
Abilities & Skills
Dragonriding
Rhaenyra rides Syrax, an amber-colored she-dragon with curved horns. Their bond is close enough that Syrax's agitation can compel Rhaenyra into flight, while Rhaenyra increasingly learns to employ her dragon in battle and diplomacy. 21 85 96
- Uses Syrax for rapid travel between King's Landing, the Vale, Dragonstone, and Storm's End. 48 92 190
- Conducts aerial fire-support strikes against the Mountain Clans. 96
- Uses Syrax's presence as leverage in negotiations with House Baratheon. 190
- Takes her younger half-brothers Aegon and Aemond flying as part of her duties as their elder sister. 162
- Syrax can become difficult to control when distracted by prey or battle carnage. 96
Political Leadership
Rhaenyra becomes increasingly willing to wield her authority as heir rather than defer to the Small Council or her father.
- Refuses political marriages that would compromise her autonomy or her relationship with Aemon. 137
- Confronts Duke Boremund Baratheon over his support for the Sea Snake and pressures him with the prospect of Targaryen dragonriders. 190
- Supports the creation of the Dragon Clan Council to regulate dragonriders and provide military authority in major conflicts. 205
- Publicly states that she, Aemon, Laena, and Laenor will join the Dragonrider Legion. 319
Infrastructure and Administration
Rhaenyra demonstrates practical skill when given direct responsibility outside the Red Keep.
- Directs Syrax's dragonfire to heat stone during the construction of a mountain road. 92
- Names the route Vale Road, intending it as a lasting benefit for trade and travelers rather than a monument to herself. 101
- Arranges practical work for impoverished King's Landing children known as the New Field Orphans. 132
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Syrax — Her dragon. Rhaenyra treats Syrax as both a source of strength and a beloved companion. 21 82 173

Choice of Aemon

Dragonrider Diplomacy
Rhaenyra asserts that being a dragonrider gives her a duty beyond ceremonial appearances. She negotiates with Storm's End, threatens consequences for disloyalty to the Iron Throne, and supports broader institutional authority for Targaryen dragonriders. 187 190 205
Motherhood and Dynastic Legacy
Rhaenyra becomes deeply concerned with Syrax's eggs and the future growth of the royal family's dragonrider line. She later bears Jaehaerys and Lucerys while continuing to participate in political affairs. 173 263 310
