Background

Haku is a reincarnated outsider whose System had accompanied him since childhood. His parents were killed, after which he was taken to his aunt, Portgas D. Rouge, at age two. Garp later took him in as his grandson and placed him in Foosha Village, where Haku grew up alongside Luffy, Ace, and Sabo. 12

Garp’s harsh but protective upbringing shaped Haku’s attachment to the Marines. He trained under both Garp and Zephyr, gaining the praise of both men before Marine Headquarters learned of his existence. 1 382

At seventeen, Haku was brought to Marineford as Garp’s Admiral candidate. Despite Sengoku’s reservations about his age and Akainu’s hostility, Haku’s strength convinced Steel Bone Kong to appoint him the Marines’ fourth Admiral. He selected Purple Blade as his official title. 1 5 9

Appearance

Haku is a notably handsome young man whose looks often attract unwanted attention. His standard Admiral appearance includes a Marine coat, a custom purple suit, and Ryujin Jakka’s distinctive purple hilt. 30 131

  • Initially appeared as a seventeen-year-old Marine candidate. 1
  • Wears a Marine coat over a purple headquarters-tailored suit. 131
  • Carries Ryujin Jakka at his waist; its purple hilt is closely associated with him. 100 247
  • Following later transformations, he is described as nearly two meters tall and heavily muscular. 271 295
  • Bonney’s power once temporarily reduced him to a much younger appearance. 236

Personality

Haku is brazen, theatrical, and fond of provoking people more powerful or politically influential than himself. He taunts Akainu, the Five Elders, and even Imu, often using humor or shameless behavior to control a tense situation. 9 143 286 527

Despite this irreverence, he is observant and calculating. He identifies Golden Lion’s likely objective, manipulates Sengoku into suspecting Doflamingo, and plans around larger political shifts rather than treating battles as isolated events. 94 174 397

His sense of justice is severe. Haku despises pirate brutality and Celestial Dragon oppression, and he is prepared to use extreme measures to create a world without either pirates or Celestial Dragons. 90 397 He nevertheless protects civilians, heals allies, aids former comrades, and repeatedly intervenes for people he considers his responsibility. 137 299 502

Abilities & Skills

System and System Space

Haku possesses a System that assigns quests, records his progress, grants abilities from other worlds, and stores items in an inaccessible System Space. 1 12

  • Can materialize weapons and items seemingly from thin air. 1
  • Receives powers, weapons, and special items as quest rewards. 1 9 227
  • Uses Companion Cards for long-distance travel, though the card requires a cooldown period after use. 236 238
  • Has bestowed a Schrift ability upon another person, demonstrating that some of his powers can be shared. 473

Haki and Spiritual Pressure

Haku possesses all three forms of Haki and supplements them with Spiritual Pressure.

  • Conqueror’s Haki — Advanced; can suppress vice admirals, overwhelm groups, coat attacks, and clash with figures such as Kaido, Shanks, and Imu. 6 40 471 526
  • Armament Haki — Advanced; combines with his physical strikes and swordsmanship. 84 351
  • Observation Haki — Advanced; detects threats across vast distances and anticipates attacks before they occur. 28 299
  • Spiritual Pressure — Can reinforce Conqueror’s Haki, repel enemies, and power his Zanpakutō techniques. 6 299
  • Haku was temporarily unable to use Haki while fighting with only soul power outside his original body. 465

Rumble-Rumble Fruit

Haku’s awakened lightning Logia is one of his primary combat powers. 227

  • Can generate and control lightning, including Eighty Million Volts: Lightning Dragon and Ten Thousand Thunders. 78 45
  • Uses elementalization and lightning-enhanced speed to reposition during combat. 39
  • Can fly or hover through the fruit’s aerial suspension ability. 202
  • His electromagnetic perception allows him to detect communications and signals. 94
  • Awakening is accompanied by a blue-white ribbon and increased command over natural lightning. 430

Zanpakutō and Swordsmanship

Haku is a Great Swordsman whose combat reputation is recognized even by Dracule Mihawk. 465 520

  • Ryujin Jakka — His principal flame-type Zanpakutō; its Shikai and Bankai were unlocked before his Admiral appointment. 12
    • Produces flames capable of incineration and manipulates extreme contained temperature. 521
    • Its Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, includes East: Rising Sun Blade and West: Burning Prison Robe. 503
    • Its attacks forced Kaido to evade and left him burned during their duel. 43
  • Zangetsu / Tensa Zangetsu — Haku used Tensa Zangetsu’s Bankai to counter Kizaru and Fujitora’s combined assault. 299
  • Hyōrinmaru, Senbonzakura, and Minazuki — Additional Zanpakutō with unlocked Shikai and Bankai. 227
  • Muramasa — An unlocked Zanpakutō capable of responding to his summons. 122 163
  • His swordsmanship remains dangerous even without Haki or most of his supernatural abilities; he used Dual Sword Style to injure Ryokugyu while stalling three Admirals. 465
  • His duel with Mihawk ended without a declared victor and became an exchange of their respective sword philosophies. 522

Hollow Mask and Hollowfication

The Hollow Mask amplifies Haku’s physical power, speed, and destructive potential, but initially carried a risk of losing control. 9 10

  • Grants a feral, destructive aura and changes his voice and demeanor. 10
  • Allows him to fire a massive Cero capable of destroying a large section of an island. 10
  • Heightens his aggression and influenced his confession to Momousagi. 10 12
  • Reached full mastery by the completion of the Golden Lion quest. 227

Six Eyes, Cursed Techniques, and Hōgyoku

Haku awakened the Six Eyes through the System but initially lacked the Cursed Energy necessary to use them because of Heaven and Curse. He uses the incomplete Hōgyoku to compensate. 94

  • Blue — Compresses matter and distance; Haku condensed a sandstorm into a contained sphere and crossed space to reach Cobra instantly. 143
  • Cian — A projected technique created by overlapping Blue and Reversal Technique: Hé; it destroyed a falling meteor without leaving fragments. 299
  • Reverse Cursed Technique — Enables rapid recovery from severe injuries. 270
  • High-output Cian usage consumes an exceptionally large amount of Cursed Energy. 299

Heaven and Curse, Regeneration, and Mechanical Body

Heaven and Curse enhances Haku’s physical potential and is compatible with his Armament Haki. 56

  • Provides extreme resilience, including resistance to attacks that would otherwise pierce or disable him. 131
  • Grants Super Regeneration, allowing recovery from severe physical damage. 94
  • Vegapunk found Haku’s body unusually capable of recovery and adaptation during forced mechanical modification. 280
  • Haku restored his body with Breath of the Archangel after melting internal Pacifista components. 288
  • Excessive power use can still cause catastrophic side effects; he collapsed unconscious at G-5 after overexertion. 275

Divine Axe Rita and Solar Nen

Divine Axe Rita is a golden, heat-emitting axe powered through Haku’s solar Nen ability. 56 271

  • Can split lightning attacks and unleash Mote Slash. 271 273
  • Raises the surrounding temperature enough to ignite enemies’ clothing and scorch opponents through contact. 273
  • Creates a miniature sun whose destructive radius depends on Haku’s spiritual power. 227
  • Use causes extreme weakness after sunset until the following dawn. 56

Quincy Power and Schrift Bestowal

Haku awakened Quincy power and can inscribe Schrift abilities into another person’s soul. 430 473

  • Granted Uta the Schrift “Absorb Assimilate.” 473
  • Can provide a Quincy Cross and enable the formation of a Spirit Bow. 473
  • The bestowed Schrift can absorb and integrate powers, including Haki and Totemjika’s power. 473
  • Bestowing souls shortens Haku’s lifespan until those souls return to him. 473

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ryujin Jakka — Flame-type Zanpakutō and Haku’s signature weapon. 521
  • Hyōrinmaru, Zangetsu, Senbonzakura, Minazuki, and Muramasa — Additional Zanpakutō acquired through the System. 122 227

  • Monkey D. Luffy — Adoptive younger brother and someone Haku actively guides and protects. 163 238 502
