Red Light Spirit Beast

When Lu Qing heard that familiar scratching at the door, he could hardly believe his ears.

Hadn't Old Doctor Chen said that his Medicinal Powder was exceedingly effective, that even Jackals would keep their distance upon smelling it? Why had this fellow come again? Lu Qing was on the verge of breaking down.

Could it be that he would be unable to sleep again tonight?

This could not go on. If he did not settle this matter, he feared he would never sleep soundly again.

After two nights of poor sleep in a row, Lu Qing's temper had grown a little irritable as well.

He wanted to see just what sort of thing had the nerve to be so bold.

Gripping the stick by his bed, Lu Qing crept to the back of the front door. Then, all at once, he yanked open the bolt and flung the door wide.

This sudden move clearly gave whatever was outside quite a fright as well.

A black shadow shot out of the courtyard in an instant.

Ever since awakening his Supernatural Ability, Lu Qing's eyes had actually undergone certain subtle changes.

First, his eyesight had become excellent. Even things far away were clear to him.

Second, his perception of light sources had also become extremely keen.

Though he still could not see in complete darkness, as long as there was even a trace of light, he could make out things seven or eight parts out of ten.

Now, borrowing the rather bright moonlight overhead, Lu Qing finally saw clearly what had been troubling him these past two nights.

It was a Black Little Beast.

It was two feet long, looking part cat and part leopard, with two large eyes like lightbulbs.

At that moment, the Black Little Beast's fur was slightly puffed up, its tail raised, its limbs crouched low. Its hackles were up as it watched Lu Qing warily.

Once Lu Qing saw what the Black Little Beast looked like, he relaxed instead.

Fortunately, the little beast did not look very large, nor did it seem particularly vicious.

That made sense. A fellow that had been frightened away by him slamming the door last night and had not dared return all night could not possibly have much courage.

For some reason, the Black Little Beast did not flee this time. It remained crouched low, staring at Lu Qing.

Lu Qing quietly faced it off and did not rashly try to drive it away.

He wanted to use his Supernatural Ability to inspect the little beast's information before deciding what to do.

Lu Qing did his best to remain calm as his gaze fell upon the little beast.

Yet very soon, his eyes suddenly widened.

A faint Red Light emerged from the mysterious little beast.

Black Night Spirit Fox: Mountain Spirit Beast, juvenile, female.

Extremely fast, with sharp claws capable of shattering stone and rending gold.

Legend had it that Black Night Spirit Foxes loved eating fish, yet were innately averse to water and could only gaze at fish and sigh.

A Red-Light Grade beast?!

Lu Qing nearly jumped in shock.

The Supernatural Ability radiance emanating from this mysterious little beast had actually reached the Red-Light Grade.

Did that not make it an existence on the same level as Old Doctor Chen?

No wonder the Medicinal Powder had been useless.

After taking several deep breaths, Lu Qing worked hard to calm his emotions.

A surge of relief suddenly rose in his heart.

Fortunately, he had not acted rashly just now.

Who would have thought this little thing was actually a Red-Light Grade Spirit Beast?

And what had that description said? Extremely fast! Its claws could shatter stone and rend gold!

With such exaggerated killing power, even tigers and leopards might not compare to it, right? Fortunately, this little beast was timid. Otherwise, he would probably already be lying on the ground.

Quietly hiding the stick behind his back, Lu Qing revealed a harmless smile.

"Little fellow, did you come here because you wanted fish?"

The Black Little Beast continued to watch Lu Qing warily, seemingly not understanding what he was saying.

Lu Qing had not expected a wild beast to understand his words anyway.

He carefully shifted his feet and, while doing his best not to startle the Black Little Beast, quickly retrieved two pieces of dried fish from the kitchen.

When Lu Qing appeared in the doorway holding the fish, he distinctly saw the Black Little Beast's eyes seem to light up.

Sure enough, this fellow had come for the fish.

Lu Qing recalled the third description he had just seen.

He waved the fish in front of it.

"Sorry, I frightened you just now. These two pieces of fish are my apology."

The Black Little Beast's lightbulb-like eyes in the night followed the fish pieces as they swayed from side to side.

Seeing this, Lu Qing's heart settled.

"Take them."

He tossed the fish pieces into the courtyard, deliberately throwing them farther away from the Black Little Beast to avoid provoking it.

The fish pieces landed on the ground, startling the little beast into retreating several steps as it stared intently at Lu Qing.

Lu Qing did not move, standing quietly where he was.

Perhaps sensing that Lu Qing had no intention of attacking, the Black Little Beast's raised fur settled somewhat.

It looked at the fish pieces on the ground, its nose twitching a few times, then suddenly moved.

Lu Qing saw only a black shadow flash past. The next instant, the fish pieces on the ground had vanished.

Right after that, the little beast leaped over the fence and swiftly disappeared into the night mist.

After waiting quietly for a while and confirming that the little beast had left, Lu Qing finally shut the door and returned to his room.

Once he lay down on the bed, Lu Qing's heart began pounding violently beyond his control.

It could not be helped. What had just happened had truly been rather perilous.

Though the Black Little Beast seemed timid, who knew whether it might attack people if provoked?

As the saying went, even a rabbit would bite when driven into a corner.

Besides, that was not a rabbit, but a Spirit Beast with formidable offensive power!

Its claws were sharp enough to shatter stone and rend gold!

If it could tear apart even metal and stone, let alone flesh and blood.

That was why Lu Qing truly had not dared provoke it.

Fortunately, this Black Little Beast was not only timid, but not particularly aggressive either.

Otherwise, whether Lu Qing could have survived just now would still be an open question.

"How come the villagers have never mentioned such a powerful wild beast?"

After calming down, a question arose in Lu Qing's heart.

Then he recalled those descriptions revealed by his Supernatural Ability.

That little beast seemed to be a juvenile. Could its parents be nearby as well?

Probably not. If its parents were nearby, they would likely have come knocking in a group long ago.

Lu Qing had not forgotten that the description said Black Night Spirit Foxes loved eating fish.

Then it must have migrated here from elsewhere, perhaps driven away by its parents, or perhaps something had happened to them?

Lu Qing made several guesses, but none led anywhere.

Still, he had a feeling that after tonight, the Black Little Beast would likely come back here again.

There was no basis for it. He simply had that feeling.

"Looks like I still can't give up fishing."

Lu Qing thought helplessly.

Originally, he had planned to put fishing aside for the time being and devote himself wholeheartedly to studying medicine.

After all, once Old Doctor Chen sold the Red Moon Carp, he would have a considerable sum of money, enough to ensure that Xiao Yan and he could live without worry for quite some time.

But now that this Black Little Beast had latched onto him, he had no choice but to alter his plans.

That was a Red-Light Grade Spirit Beast. It was not something he could afford to provoke, so for now, he could only focus on placating it.

"What kind of mess is this?"

Lu Qing could not help but sigh mournfully.
