Background / History

Chen Songqing was a wandering doctor who settled near Nine Li Village after witnessing surrounding villagers suffer and die because they had no access to medical care. He remained there for ten years, becoming the sole doctor for several nearby villages and ensuring that minor illnesses could be treated before becoming fatal. 25

He quietly maintained a cultivation practice alongside his medical work. Before Lu Qing became his disciple, Chen had already cultivated to the Acquired Inner Organs Realm and developed the Body Nourishing Fist from an incomplete cultivation method. 8 98

After treating Lu Qing's severe illness, Chen recognized the boy's literacy, memory, and potential. He accepted Lu Qing as a medical apprentice after setting the condition that he memorize the Classic of Materia Medica within one month. 9 11 26

Chen later entered the Innate Realm at the Half-Mountain Courtyard. Though the breakthrough restored his youthful appearance, he deliberately reverted to his familiar elderly form, believing that appearing young would interfere with his work as a village doctor. 117

As the world grew more chaotic, Chen's medical ethics expanded into a broader commitment to confront evil. Inspired by the Medicine Saint's maxim that a great doctor “treats the world,” he chose to seek justice for the victims of the Flowing Cloud Sect and delayed his journey to Central Province. 227

Appearance

Chen is usually seen as a thin, kind-faced elderly man with gray hair and wrinkles. His gentle bearing gives others a sense of peace, while his cultivation allows him to restore a much younger appearance at will. 8 117

  • Thin build and kind facial features. 2 8
  • Often presents himself as an ordinary old doctor or wandering physician. 134 264
  • Can conceal his cultivation so thoroughly that even Innate Realm experts struggle to assess him. 117 256
  • When no longer suppressing his Qi Blood, he can appear as a black-haired middle-aged man. 117 243
  • After reaching the Nascent Soul Realm, his natural restored appearance resembles a peaceful man in his thirties. 871

Personality

Chen is compassionate, humble, and deeply committed to healing. He regards treating illnesses and saving lives as a physician's duty rather than a source of reputation or Merit, and he repeatedly declines praise for his achievements. 25 134 463

Although he dislikes killing and initially avoids cultivating combat methods, he will act decisively against those who harm innocent people. The Flowing Cloud Sect's atrocities, the Feng Province plague, and later demonic threats each draw out his resolve and killing intent. 98 227 321 699

He is also modest about his martial ability, habitually describing himself as poor at fighting even when his cultivation and swordsmanship surpass most contemporaries. 98 216
