Cultivation Mechanics

Circulation and conversion

Dou Qi is circulated through designated meridian routes established by a cultivation method. Changing methods requires opening any newly required meridians, converting the old Dou Qi into the new method’s power, and repeatedly circulating the new route until the body adapts 22.

Higher-grade methods can greatly alter Dou Qi’s quality, quantity, absorption rate, and controllability. When Xiao Heng initially cultivated the Heavenly Rank Four Directions Sword Canon, two-thirds of his existing Dou Qi was forcibly refined away, leaving it purer but temporarily threatening his ability to sustain the Dou Wang realm 201.

Realm transformations

Attributes

Most cultivators possess a single Dou Qi attribute, while only a very small number possess two. Xiao Heng is an exceptional case: he possesses all attributes and can cultivate techniques and combat skills of any attribute without inherent incompatibility 5.

• Attribute-less Dou Qi — White and described as the most fundamental form of Dou Qi 22.
• Fire Attribute — Provides explosive force and is central to Xiao Heng’s Heavenly Flame-based combat and alchemy 27 838.
• Wood Attribute — Can temper and calm violent flames during pill refinement; it is also associated with recovery 5 838.
• Earth Attribute — Increases solidity, defensive power, and the depth of Dou Qi 838.
• Water Attribute — Can take the form of ice or water and is associated with life 838.
• Metal Attribute — Governs sharpness and slaughter among the Five Elements 838.

Applications

Combat

Dou Qi is the primary power source for combat skills, direct energy attacks, defensive armor, and weapon enhancement.

• Xiao Heng formed a protective Dou Qi armor reinforced by Thunder Gang Purple Lotus Fire; it withstood simultaneous flames and energy attacks without visible damage 111.
• Upon reaching Dou Wang, his command over natural energy allowed him to greatly amplify his combat skills and recover more effectively in extended battles 196.
• High-tier combat skills can consume enormous reserves. Xiao Heng’s Wind Thunder Heaven and Earth Travel consumed roughly three times as much Dou Qi as Explosive Step 119.
• At the Dou Sheng level, Xiao Heng’s Five Elements Physique and Heavenly Rank cultivation method allowed him to recover expended Dou Qi rapidly even after exchanging Heavenly Rank techniques 1057 1058.

Alchemy

Alchemy requires fine, stable control of Dou Qi rather than only raw output.

• Xiao Heng channels Dou Qi into a medicine cauldron to create an alchemical flame; Wood Attribute Dou Qi can calm and regulate the fire 5.
• Refining high-grade pills can consume as much Dou Qi as a major battle, making a strong cultivation base essential for high-level alchemists 30.
• Heavenly Flames can further improve an alchemist’s flame control and refining efficiency, though their violent nature must be managed carefully 27 30.

Mobility and utility

• Dou Qi can dry clothing almost instantly when circulated through the body 11.
• Flying Dou Techniques and Dou Wang-level wings enable aerial movement, though high-speed techniques carry significant energy costs 119 186.
• Cultivators can use Dou Qi to power arrays, formations, weapons, and devices such as Space Ships 605 1133.

Limitations and Risks

• Energy exhaustion — Powerful Dou Techniques can drain a cultivator rapidly; even Xiao Heng’s high reserves could be heavily depleted by defensive armor or high-speed movement skills 111 119.
• Breakthrough failure — Failed breakthroughs can cause cultivation regression, injuries, and a psychological obstacle to later advancement 16 186.
• Method conversion losses — Switching to a stronger cultivation method may consume or forcibly refine away existing Dou Qi before the new circulation stabilizes 201.
• Attribute imbalance — Xiao Heng’s elemental powers risked rioting and destroying him when they lacked balance; Little Grass identified complete, roughly equal Five Elements as the solution 693.
• Foreign Dou Qi incompatibility — Dou Qi is violent and develops a distinctive aura through cultivation methods. Absorbing another cultivator’s Dou Qi can cause explosion or ruin one’s foundation 277.
