There was no denying that Reed was a genius, and their time together felt good, but his obsession with experiments and research far outweighed his attention to her. That was why she'd been hesitating about whether to give it a try.

Now, no more hesitation.

Reed liked experiments and research? Let him like them.

Benjamin liked worrying about his buddy's love life? Let him worry about someone else.

Watching Susan storm off in a huff, Benjamin opened his mouth but said nothing, at a loss. He didn't know whether to chase after her and stop her, or call his good buddy Reed to come over right away.

For a moment, he was completely stuck!

"Still a single dog yourself, and you're trying to help someone else find love. Tsk tsk--"

"Having a good buddy like you, Reed's pretty unlucky."

Su Quan, never one to miss a show, saw Benjamin looking dumbfounded and threw out a snide remark.

What bad intentions could Benjamin have?

He just wanted to protect his buddy's almost-girlfriend from being stolen by someone else.

"Bastard, this is all your fault, and you're still gloating!"

Benjamin swung his fist at Su Quan in anger.

"Thud!"

Before the punch even landed, his furious expression froze. He clutched his stomach, swaying in pain, bent over, and sucked in a sharp breath.

"I'm not taking the blame for that--"

Su Quan didn't flatter himself that a few flirtatious words could affect Susan and Reed's relationship.

Clearly, they didn't have much of a relationship yet.

Susan was so beautiful, she definitely had plenty of suitors. Future Doctor Doom, Victor von Doom, was one of them.

Being flirted with, being hit on—she should be used to it by now. It wouldn't affect the feelings and relationships she took seriously.

In fact, before Benjamin stuck his nose in, Susan had already made her stance clear.

"I don't have room for your heart!"

Susan was angry partly because Benjamin's good intentions backfired.

After all, this was America, where "life is precious, love is dearer, but for freedom, both can be tossed aside."

Freedom above all, freedom forever!

The other reason was probably that Reed was too much of a straight guy.

Showing up late for dates, more than once. Even if they weren't together yet, if they were, she'd dump him soon enough. Otherwise, why would Susan end up with Victor Doom after graduation?

Benjamin slowly straightened up and looked at Su Quan. This scrawny guy could really fight—was this kung fu?

It hurt like hell, but he couldn't back down. He adjusted his breathing, ready for round two.

Just then, a scruffy, unkempt man jogged over.

"Ben, what happened? I just ran into Susan, and she told me not to contact her anymore."

"Reed—he, he hit on Susan. I said you were her boyfriend, and Susan—sorry, buddy, I think I messed up." Benjamin lowered his head in regret and apology.

He and Reed were both straight guys. Straight guys had one trait, or rather, one logic: they liked to reason things out, or you could call it being rational.

Su Quan hitting on her was just the trigger. What really made Susan angry was him saying Reed was her boyfriend, interfering with her emotional freedom.

Reed's mood turned complicated. He couldn't blame Benjamin for meddling—it was for his sake—but still—

"Forget it, forget it. I'll go apologize to Susan. She should forgive me."

"I'll go with you." Benjamin wanted to apologize to Susan too.

Good grief, Su Quan thought. These two iron-clad straight guys were way too straight, weren't they?

One thought an apology would fix everything and make it blow over, and the other was even worse—he wanted to go along?!

Reed going alone might have a chance to salvage things, but Benjamin tagging along—

Was this an apology?

This was a surefire way to ruin it all!

With Reed's personality, if Susan didn't accept Benjamin's apology, or accepted it but didn't change her mind, he'd definitely say something like, "We already apologized, what more do you want?" or "What do we have to do for you to forgive us?"

"Ahem—" Su Quan coughed deliberately, then said something to the two men glaring at him that caught them off guard and left them stunned.

"There's a job. You in or not?"

Benjamin sneered. "Are you crazy? You hit on his—you hit on the person he likes, and you want us to work for you?"

Su Quan raised two fingers. "200,000 USD."

"..."

Benjamin shut up.

Su Quan pulled out the Time Controller and introduced it to Reed. "This is a Time Controller. It originally had the functions of storing and viewing footage, setting time, and viewing and traveling across different timelines and Parallel Universes."

"Don't ask where it came from. Don't ask who I am. Fix it, take the money, do what you want, and don't cause yourselves trouble."

"In or out?"

Reed and Benjamin exchanged glances. A Time Controller? Traveling across different timelines and Parallel Universes?

Was that real or fake?

Sounded pretty far-fetched!

Benjamin didn't buy it, thinking it was just Playing them, but Reed was somewhat convinced—or rather, as a genius scientist, he was deeply interested in such a subject.

With his skills, he could take the Time Controller apart and see if it was real or fake at a glance.

Take the money first. If it was fake, it wouldn't waste much time. Even if he was being played, 200,000 USD meant he'd be happy to be played a few more times.

If it was real, it would be a milestone in human technological history!

Imagine being able to travel through time and Parallel Universes. The entire human race in this world—and even countless other worlds—could benefit and undergo earth-shattering changes!

"I agree, but you have to pay us the 200,000 USD first and provide any equipment we might need for the repairs. If we can't fix it, we'll refund the money. Also, we can sign a confidentiality agreement."

Reed thought it over and gave his answer.

"I'll contact you."

Su Quan nodded, turned around, and walked off with a casual air.

"He—he didn't ask for your contact info, did he?" Benjamin asked, stunned.

Reed was silent for a moment. "No."

"Then how's he going to contact you?"

"..."

Benjamin rubbed his shiny bald head and said hesitantly, "Tell me he's not just messing with us, right? That Time Controller, the 200,000 USD—all just stuff he made up on the spot."

Reed fell silent again. It seemed... not impossible.

The sun set, and night began to fall.

At a high-end hotel near Columbia University.

After hitting up a few street gangs, quietly scrounging up the 200,000 USD he planned to pay Reed, and netting over 20 Points, Su Quan had just stepped out the door when he unexpectedly saw Susan coming from the direction of the school.

Susan spotted Su Quan too. "It's you!"

"What a coincidence. Where are you headed?" Su Quan asked with a smile.

Susan smiled back. "Yeah, I didn't expect to run into you. Just taking a walk."

"I'm about to go eat. I can't eat without you."

Susan: ???

His words threw her off. Was he this direct? They weren't even that close yet!

"Sorry, I have things to do, so—" Susan started to decline.

Su Quan smiled and said, "A man wants to invite the woman he likes to dinner. First, he says: 'Can I take you out to eat?' The woman tells him: 'Women don't like questions.'"
