Background / History
Yu Xiaogang joined Shrek Academy as an instructor, insisting that students address him as “Grandmaster.” He promoted the idea that effort, rather than a Martial Soul alone, determines a Soul Master’s potential, then assessed the students through sparring exercises and tailored training plans 17 42.
He regarded Tang San as the core of his ideal team and saw Dai Mubai as an essential frontline member. Dai’s departure from Shrek angered him because it disrupted the squad Yu intended to build around Tang San 37.
Yu became increasingly hostile toward Jiang Qianhai. He dismissed Jiang’s early Title Douluo-level strength as either a disguise by an “old monster” or the result of an evil method, and later urged Tang San and Xiao Wu to drive a wedge between Jiang and Zhu Zhuqing 18 39. When Jiang attacked Tang San, Yu attempted to intervene and was nearly killed by a casual release of Battle Qi 59.
After recovering, Yu devoted himself to revenge. He claimed he could assemble multiple Title Douluo through his connections, contacted nearly ten of them, and encouraged forces such as the Clear Sky Sect to develop killing intent toward Jiang 94 116 123. He also misrepresented events to Yu Tianheng, portraying Jiang as a murderous villain who had targeted him and Tang San without cause 98.
Yu sought Bibi Dong’s cooperation in killing Jiang for his Soul Bones. Instead, Bibi Dong accused him of plagiarizing other scholars’ research to create the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls, then tortured him in the Pope’s Hall 127 128. He later escaped Spirit Hall after manipulating Qin Lan into helping him, without regard for the punishment that befell her and her father 164.
His reputation collapsed publicly in Spirit City when his alleged plagiarism and deceit were exposed. Liu Erlong destroyed Luo Sanpao, Flender abandoned him, and Spirit Hall captured him 190 192. Jiang subsequently caused Yu’s body to explode and regenerate repeatedly, leaving him physically and mentally damaged 193. Even after Tang San’s divine-power avatar failed to free him, Yu remained alive and was healed only so he could continue serving as the Nutcracker’s victim 235 236.
Appearance
Following prolonged torture, Yu is described as pale and haggard, with dark circles beneath his eyes and involuntary facial twitches 189.
- His expression becomes increasingly strained and unstable under the Nutcracker’s repeated attacks 189 193.
- His body can regenerate after being remotely exploded, though the process leaves severe psychological damage 193.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is proud of his reputation as the “Grandmaster” and deeply invested in being remembered as a wise scholar. He seeks praise for his theories and reacts poorly when his knowledge, status, or authority are challenged 56 126.
He is highly ambitious regarding Tang San, whom he considers his path to lasting recognition. Yu believes that cultivating Tang San into a god would make him a “God Master” whose status surpasses even that of a god 94. This ambition drives his concern for Tang San’s survival, but also his willingness to manipulate allies, spread accusations, and pursue revenge through stronger people 39 94 123.
As his defeats and torture accumulate, Yu becomes increasingly obsessive and unstable. He refuses to abandon his hatred of Jiang Qianhai, clings to the belief that Tang San will eventually rescue him, and remains unable to accept the loss of his allies or public standing 189 192 194.

Three-in-One Martial Soul Fusion Technique
Yu is one component of the Golden Iron Triangle’s Martial Soul Fusion Technique.
- The technique requires Yu, Flender, and Liu Erlong to act together 190.
- Yu attempts to initiate it after being publicly confronted, but Liu Erlong attacks him before the fusion can be completed 190.
Training and Team Strategy
Yu develops training regimens and directs battle formations for Soul Master teams.
- He organizes individual training, including Tang San’s practice with the Eight Spider Lances 42.
- He designs a five-minute opening strategy for the Blue Tyrant Battle Team and assigns A Xing as the team’s battlefield commander 119.
- His theoretical authority is disputed: Bibi Dong alleges that most of his published theories were plagiarized from other scholars 128.
