The scene shifted, and Mel had already quietly arrived outside the imperial city.
Compared to the later Garde Imperial City, this human-built city was clearly far from grand. It was only about the size of a small border town.

The guards on duty suddenly looked up at the wall, only to find nothing there.

Mel quietly vanished into the night. The guards were not standing far apart, but after he completely erased his interaction with the world, no one could possibly notice him.
He could not be detected by sight, and Magic Fluctuations were even less likely to reveal him unless he actively used magic.
Boldly activating Magic Perception, Mel sensed Carlos's palace. Rather than a palace, it was more like a somewhat larger courtyard, lacking the magnificent splendor of later times.
Come to think of it, Carlos had led humanity out of slavery. That meant he could not truly have been an "emperor."
