"Could it be that you planned to return to this world after you died?" Mel looked at Carlos. They had met a little too late; Carlos was already close to death.
"No, it wasn't technically possible. Our souls didn't belong to this world, so even undead magic couldn't bring us back to life. Especially since who knew how the original world operated? Perhaps our original world didn't even have souls at all."
"So you had no idea whether this plan would succeed?"
"That's right. I only wanted to see whether it would draw the attention of some higher existence. Perhaps once I died, I would truly be gone for good."
"Then why did you still do it? You should know that because of you, people were still pondering this matter ten thousand years later. That Red Dragon nearly killed me over it."
"The Red Dragon? That did sound like his style. But I had to leave them some hope. I was the one who gathered them together, but human lifespans were simply too short. There were still so many things left undone..." Carlos chuckled somewhat unkindly. He could probably imagine what an absurd scene that had been.
The Red Dragon had probably attacked the moment they disagreed. If one wanted the friendship of dragonkind, one had to at least suppress them with strength.
Now Mel roughly knew the truth. This big shot had no idea whether he could return, nor did he know whether the soul monitoring he had done was useful, because those in this world had no way of understanding the operating logic of their original world.
Judging by the existence of the system, they really did seem more like people directly placed into this world by some higher existence. But what was the meaning of their arrival?
