Ch. 121Ex-Machina in Dimensional Travel
Key plot points and events
- While analyzing the Great Holy Grail, Xiu Er considers Number One’s proposal to hold another Holy Grail War so the group can study more Servants. Number Two supports the idea, arguing that a single battle offers too few useful Noble Phantasms to analyze.
- Xiu Er completes his analysis and synchronizes the newly discovered information with all his Doppelgangers. They learn that the Grail connects to the Throne of Heroes, a repository of Heroic Spirit data beyond the flow of time.
- The discovery seems to undermine Number Two’s argument: perhaps the group can access Servant data directly through the Grail. But Xiu Er explains that the link does not allow them to download that data, so he approves Number One’s proposal after all.
- Xiu Er tries to reproduce the Great Holy Grail using the Codex of the Whispers. The result is only a mass of high-energy matter, not a functioning Grail; he lacks the Third Magic, Materialization of the Soul, needed to recreate its essential functions.
- Instead, Xiu Er begins uploading his own data to the Throne of Heroes. His plan is for a version of himself to be summoned as a Servant, encounter other Servants, and send information back to him across worlds. A golden gate opens amid flames as an armored figure emerges, hooded in black.
Character developments and interactions
- Number One’s childhood perspective makes him the group’s “idea man.” Frustrated that Xiu Er usually rejects his proposals, he has Number Two present this one instead.
- Number Two carefully argues in favor of the plan, monitoring Xiu Er’s reaction. After the Grail’s capabilities are revealed, he assumes his case has failed—but Xiu Er’s approval surprises him.
- Xiu Er remains analytical and emotionally restrained, but his failed attempt to replicate the Grail leaves him mildly displeased. He quickly turns to a practical workaround.
Significant themes
- Knowledge and its limits: Xiu Er can analyze and copy much of the Grail’s structure, yet a missing magical principle prevents a true replication.
- Adaptation and ingenuity: When direct access to Servant records proves impossible, Xiu Er devises an indirect way to gather information.
- Identity across time and worlds: A summoned Doppelganger can act independently while remaining connected to Xiu Er and his expanding database.
- Collective yet individual thought: The Doppelgangers share memories and a machine-like way of communicating, but their different points of origin produce distinct perspectives.
