Background / History

Sukuna was born in the Heian period as an unnamed, abandoned Cursed Child. He emerged from a twin birth with four arms and four eyes, displayed no ordinary infant behavior, and could consume flesh and blood. Even as a child, he could use Blaze to melt the iron cage that confined him. 196

Shen Yuanyi kept the child alive while investigating time travel and brought him toward Heian-kyō. Sukuna later studied Jujutsu under Shen Yuanyi and Kenjaku, mastering the knowledge taught to him with abnormal speed. 197 219 222 After roughly a decade, he left Shen Yuanyi's side to pursue greater strength independently. He began building a reputation through ruthless killings, including the massacre of a bandit group. 228

As his power and atrocities grew, Sukuna became known as Ryomen Sukuna, a title reflecting both his inhuman appearance and his near-transcendence of humanity. The Jujutsu world attempted to appease and worship him, but he eliminated believers whose faith influenced him. Sorcerers eventually united to exorcise him and failed; after his death, his twenty fingers became Special Grade Cursed Objects. 229 240

In the modern era, Itadori Yuji consumes one of Sukuna's fingers and becomes his vessel. Sukuna briefly manifests with one finger's power, activates Fukuma Mizushi, and is defeated by Shen Yuanyi, though not exorcised. 53 He later regains strength through additional fingers and pursues Kenjaku's plans with Uraume and Ban. 119

Sukuna's appearance changes with his vessel, resurrection state, and acquired powers, but his defining traits remain four eyes and four arms.

Despite his cruelty, he is highly analytical in combat. He studies unfamiliar techniques, identifies their weaknesses, and adapts rapidly rather than relying solely on overwhelming force.
