The dust kicked up by the Magic-Energy Cannon made Wisdom Shield and the others squint. When it cleared, they saw a massive crater.
At the sight of the shot's power, the researchers running the test threw their arms around one another and cheered.
But just then, the Magic-Energy Cannon, which was supposed to fold back together, began to clatter. A moment later, its Mithril plates came cascading down.
The fallen Mithril plates were so hot that they instantly set the grass on the testing ground alight.
Wisdom Shield and the others immediately rushed to put out the fire.
The test had ended with more of a whimper than a bang, but Pembez and his team were still thrilled.
After all, they had built the Magic-Energy Cannon they had envisioned. If they kept improving this prototype, they believed it would not be long before a true Magic-Energy Cannon appeared on the battlefield.
Back at the Research Institute, Wisdom Shield nodded happily and said:
"Professor, you and your team have done exceptionally well. I'll reward you, though I'd like to see a test of the Type-Two Improved Model as soon as possible.
"Don't worry. Write me a request for anything you need, and I'll do everything I can to provide it."
Pembez chuckled, then said:
"Actually, Your Highness, seeing the Type-Two Improved Model soon is simple. Just help me poach a few senior numerical-control specialists from the Science Division. The next round of improvements will require a great many mathematical models."
Wisdom Shield had not expected Pembez to set his sights on Simov's team.
He wanted to see a Magic-Energy Cannon ready for combat as soon as possible too, but this involved Simov, so he would have to discuss it with him first.
"Professor, you're putting me in a difficult position. I'll
