Background and History
At Hogwarts, Sirius was a Gryffindor and one of the Marauders alongside James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. He became an unregistered dog Animagus so he could accompany Lupin during his werewolf transformations. Sirius and James later acknowledged that their treatment of Severus Snape had amounted to bullying 220 221.
When the Potters went into hiding, James trusted Sirius with their safety. Sirius proposed making Peter the true keeper of their protected address while publicly claiming the role himself, hoping to draw attention away from Peter. Peter betrayed the secret to Voldemort. Sirius later admitted that he had “killed the Potters,” but explained that he meant his decision had enabled their deaths 217 219.
Harry found Sirius imprisoned in Azkaban and returned with Hermione and Draco to rescue him. At Hogwarts, Sirius gave his account of the betrayal and learned that Peter had since died. Harry then revealed his identity to him 216 217 219.
Sirius reconnected with Harry and Lupin after the rescue. At his family home, 12 Grimmauld Place, he also learned that his younger brother Regulus had died trying to destroy one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. Sirius helped retrieve Regulus’s remains and planned his burial 222 223 241 243.
Appearance
Azkaban left Sirius dirty and emaciated, though he remained mentally alert. After his rescue, he is seen with long, curly black hair, a beard, and a black-and-red woolen coat 217 241.
- Animagus form: A large black dog 221 240.
- Public disguise: On one outing, he changed from dog form into a hooded black robe to conceal himself 370.
Personality
Sirius is protective of Harry: he wants to learn about Harry’s life and offers him a home. He is also candid about the recklessness of his school years, admitting that he and James picked fights with Snape and were, from Snape’s perspective, bullies 221 223.
His feelings about the Black family are conflicted. He rejected its pure-blood ideology and left home, yet Regulus’s sacrifice leaves him grieving and regretting the distance between them 241 243.
