Bruce turned on the windshield wipers, then realized that what was obstructing his vision was not fog clinging to the windshield. The fog was growing thicker, and visibility was dropping rapidly.

"Stop the car!" Aisha's childish voice carried an unusual hint of seriousness. She tugged at Bruce's sleeve and said, "Something's wrong. Stop!"

Bruce slowly eased off the gas, and the anger surging within him began to turn cold.

Without a second thought, Aisha pushed open the car door and jumped out. She stood beside the car and turned to look behind them. Bruce got out as well and turned to look back down the road they had come from.

San Francisco had disappeared.

The massive city that should have been visible on the horizon had become a stretch of dense fog through which nothing could be seen. It was as though they had already traveled far from the bustling world of civilization.

But they had not been driving for long. They were still on the way out of the city and had not even reached the suburbs. How thick would the fog have to be to erase the city's outline entirely?

Suddenly, Bruce spun around. His sharp hair sliced through the gathering fog, scattering droplets and dust. The pupils in his gray-blue eyes contracted sharply, because at the edge of the dense fog, he saw a vague figure.

"Who are you?" Bruce stepped forward, staring intently at the figure ahead. Just as he was about to take another step, Aisha grabbed him.

Bruce lowered his head to look at Aisha. She stared at his face and shook her head.

"What is that?" Bruce asked Aisha.

"I don't know." Aisha gripped the hem of Bruce's coat and said, "But he isn't human. This place is very dangerous."
