Lex ran into Pamela in the kitchen.
The newly revitalized young woman was sneaking food—or perhaps it couldn't be called sneaking. Merkel had taken out some extra desserts he had prepared and let her fill her stomach first.
"I don't know what's going on, but ever since my mental state recovered, my appetite has gotten much better. I even eat three meals a day now."
"How many meals did you eat before?"
"I'd sleep until noon, then drift around in a haze until evening. Around eight or nine, before rushing to the lab, I'd grab a sandwich or something."
"It's a miracle you're still alive."
Pamela and Lex clearly had nothing to do, so they could only sit on opposite sides of the kitchen counter and chat. Pamela looked Lex up and down and said, "Wouldn't have guessed it, but once you dress up, you actually look pretty decent."
"I wasn't expecting anything nice to come out of your mouth," Lex said listlessly.
The two of them were fairly close in age and often ran into each other at the lab, so they were familiar with one another. Lex also knew exactly what Pamela was like.
