Pamela had barely stepped out the door when her expression turned serious. She walked to where the porch met the garden's stone path, stopped, turned around, and looked up.

Directly above was Schiller's bedroom.

Lex said nothing. He stood on the porch watching her, and the meaning in his eyes could not have been clearer.

Pamela lowered her gaze and gently shook her head, softly uttering one word: "Blood."

Lex's Adam's apple bobbed slightly. He did not try to smell it. He knew that extraordinary senses capable of detecting blood from hundreds of meters away belonged to Batman and Superman. He could not do that, and even if he could smell something, it would not be reliable.

The garden was filled with scents: the rank odor of damp soil, the green smell of leaves, the earth and stone from the courtyard walls. Interwoven, they could deceive anyone's sense of smell.

Pamela clearly had not found this clue by scent. Lex saw emerald light flickering in her eyes.

"What did you see?" Lex asked quietly.

"It's hard to describe." Pamela looked at Lex with her glowing eyes.

"A woman?"

"You know?"

"I only know that a woman appeared in Schiller's bedroom. She had no appointment. She arrived suddenly."

"Unbelievable." Pamela gasped. "Was she crazy?"

"Either she was crazy, or her relationship with Professor Schiller was unusual." Lex frowned as he considered it. "I lean toward the latter. A lunatic would have a hard time precisely locating the master bedroom of Rodriguez Manor and somehow appearing there."

"I don't dare look." Pamela hurried back beneath the porch, looked upward through the porch ceiling, and said, "Schiller could come back at any moment. He needs to deal with the scene."

"What is at the scene?"

"Blood."
