"Woof... woof!"
A few barks rang out, and a cat paw immediately pressed down on the dog's muzzle. Bat-Cat pushed Krypton's mouth shut to stop him from barking, then turned and walked to the bend in the sewer, peering around it.
"Just as I thought..." Bat-Cat muttered. "Bark a few more times, Krypton. See if anyone responds."
Big Dog wagged his tail and barked twice more, but the far end of the sewer remained deathly still. There was nothing there.
"Damn it. He was clearly here. Where did he hide the person?... Forget it. Let's go up and take a look first."
The cat and dog found the sewer exit as quickly as they could. After the little cat head twisted open the manhole cover, a familiar sight greeted him: this was his hometown, Cat City Gotham.
"So where exactly is that intruder?" Krypton asked.
Bat-Cat shook his head. It did not seem that he had no idea, only that he could not be certain. The two crawled out of the sewer, slipped stealthily into an alley by the street, passed through several alleys and crossed a few streets before finding another sewer entrance.
Krypton leaned close and sniffed, smacking his lips. "I've been smelling something disgusting the whole time. If the intruder smells like that, then he probably really did go through the sewers."
"You can actually tell the difference between sewer stink and his...?"
"Don't question my sense of smell." Krypton proudly raised his head, only to be smacked with a paw again. The two of them crawled down through the entrance.
Krypton sniffed around the sewer while Bat-Cat examined the traces nearby. There were some indistinct footprints on the sewer platform, though most had been left by cats. What had led them here, however, was half of
