Schiller's thoughts raced as two facts flashed through his mind.
First, with such a huge operation, Gordon had definitely arrived.
Second, Raven was still in the house. There was no way she could hide from that old detective.
Yet he still did not hit the brakes. He drove steadily toward the police line until an officer standing in front of it waved at him to stop. Only then did Schiller slowly press the brake.
He got out of the car and saw that the officers blocking him were two young men, clearly new recruits who had only arrived recently. He held out his hands to show that he was harmless and said, "I live here. I just got back from the post office. May I ask what happened?"
Seeing Schiller in a suit, empty-handed, driving a luxury car that was well maintained, the two officers relaxed.
"Sir, there has been a murder in your neighborhood. Someone was dismembered in a gentleman's house. We've sealed off the street while we investigate."
"Then can I return to my house?"
"Not for the moment. Please wait in your car. We need to report people entering and leaving to our superiors before we can open the police line for you," one of the officers said in an official tone.
Schiller returned to his car, then beckoned the two officers over and handed one of them a roll of cash. The officer immediately understood and said, "Sorry, sir, but I have to tell you this. I'm afraid a terrible serial killer may be roaming near your neighborhood. Unless you urgently need to go home, I suggest staying in a hotel tonight."
