Pietro followed behind his sister, looking worried as his gaze kept drifting to Wanda's swollen belly.
Schiller did the math and realized Wanda was close to her due date. Why had she come all the way here at a time like this?
"Where's Erik?" Wanda asked.
"Sleeping upstairs. The professor told you too? Honestly, what was he thinking, making you come here now? What help could you possibly be?" Polaris complained. "You're about to give birth. Why aren't you staying in the hospital? What are you doing here?"
"He didn't tell me." Wanda did not argue with her. Ever since becoming pregnant, she had become much gentler. "Pietro let it slip. How could I not come take a look?"
"What exactly happened to Doctor Schiller? How could Erik get sick? Mutants like us don't get sick."
"A psychological problem."
That answer left everyone silent. Their immense powers meant they were rarely affected by the environment badly enough to fall ill, but if the problem came from their own minds, that was another matter entirely.
"When the routine he had followed for most of his life was disrupted, it caused some psychosomatic reactions." Schiller was an expert in this area. "Erik is nowhere near autistic, but he does show some signs of Asperger's syndrome."
"The pathological basis is largely the same as autism, though the symptoms are milder. The principle is the same: a sudden disruption of one's daily routine can destabilize the mind and trigger neurotic symptoms. Charles probably knew that, which is why he asked you to come."
"Is it serious?" Polaris asked anxiously.
Wanda and Pietro both looked at Schiller as well. Schiller was actually a little surprised. He knew Magneto's relationship with his children had been terrible, practically hostile, but apparently it was not quite that bad.
