Schiller knew very well that incidents within the Cthulhu Mythos system differed somewhat from those involving superheroes. They often took a long time to build up before the true disaster finally revealed itself.

Previously, Schiller had thought the hotel fit this pattern perfectly. It had been calm at first, then all kinds of bizarre occurrences gradually appeared, eventually developing into a Great Disaster that engulfed the entire city.

But if the point in time where he was existed in the past while Peter's was in the future, then the situation was stranger than imagination could encompass.
