"Mr. Nygma, thank you very much for providing us with this information, but one of my colleagues wants to see you."

Gordon rose from his chair and walked over to open the office door. A female officer in a Federal Bureau of Investigation uniform approached, flashed her badge at Nygma, and said, "Mr. Nygma, we discovered that while you were serving as a consultant to the City Planning Administration, you had illegal financial dealings with Williams Real Estate Company. We now suspect you of accepting bribes and misconduct in office. Please cooperate with our investigation. Thank you."

Nygma's eyes flew wide open. He turned to Gordon, who gave him a mocking smile.

Gordon was no longer the naive rookie he had once been. He knew that to deal with these cunning criminals, he had to be even more cunning than they were.

There was indeed not enough evidence to prove that Nygma had participated in the child abuse case. Williams and Bob were both missing, so the evidence they held against Nygma could not be presented, while Edward—the only person who might have been able to accuse Nygma—had not fully recovered, and his testimony would not be admitted.

But that did not mean Gordon could not use other means to keep Nygma under control. Some things seemed trivial until they were put under scrutiny, and the City Planning Administration was an excellent place to line one's pockets. Even if Nygma had merely been an obscure consultant at the time, a thorough investigation would find flaws in anyone.

They might not be able to obtain a search warrant or arrest warrant for Nygma through the child abuse case, but Gordon could offer to let the Federal Bureau of Investigation participate in the child abuse investigation in exchange for having them investigate
