Schiller found a hunting supply store on the eastern side of town, not far from the docks. As expected, it had a large stockpile of weapons. Hunting rifles of every model hung in neat rows on the walls, while gleaming new bullets sat displayed in the cabinets.
The bad news was that the hunting rifles hanging on the walls for display were unusable. That was normal enough. While big cities in the United States had plenty of smash-and-grab looting, that did not mean small rural towns were safe. If someone rushed in to rob the place, the guns on the walls might become the gun shop owner's own death sentence, so the critical parts had all been removed.
The counter was locked, but it was only ordinary glass. Schiller smashed it open with the Crowbar in one blow. Inside, he found some ammunition that fit the first hunting rifle, but that gun was no longer in his hands.
The pistol he had used a relatively uncommon type of ammunition. Gun stores in the United States generally did not sell equipment for small firearms, either. Compared with larger guns, small guns were easier to conceal and more suitable for carrying into public places for assassinations, so they were more strictly regulated.
Schiller made a circuit around the store. He had actually been looking for a posted notice, because the United States required legal gun stores to display the state laws concerning gun ownership. If he could find such a notice, he could determine which state he was in.
Judging by the climate, Schiller guessed it was probably one of the states near Canada. Owlman's police uniform looked somewhat like a New Jersey state police uniform, though the details differed. Still, Schiller had never heard of a place like this in New
