The moment the skill points vanished, he seemed to hear the Beyonder making a rapid series of announcements, but he could not make them out clearly, because every sound had receded from his mind.

He only heard the Beyonder's final sentence.

The world before his eyes changed.

Batman first saw a field of blood-red. Then he realized his senses had failed—more precisely, sight, smell, hearing, and touch had become tangled together.

He heard some fragmented sounds, but they were not sounds at all. They were gray ripples falling before his eyes, giving off the smell of rot and dampness. They felt somewhat like rain-soaked feathers, flowing resiliently before him.

Behind those ripples was a glimmering green. It gradually spread, dyeing his entire field of vision red, representing a series of squelching noises and falling brown-gray debris.

Batman almost immediately discerned the pattern.

Monsters were walking above his head. They conversed calmly, with a faint note of complaint. Their attention never settled on him. He had not been discovered.

The instant the monsters passed directly overhead, Batman saw a rift open in that green. His soul seemed to rise abruptly, climbing higher and higher.

Then the two monsters became tiny dots, while he, hiding beneath the bridge, rapidly swelled until he was larger than a massive sailing ship. Then he suddenly exploded into a mass of black sludge that drowned everything.

By the time Batman came back to himself, the monsters had already left.
