"You want me to pay to get Balk out?" Batman narrowed his eyes at Schiller across from him. "Why would you think I'd do that?"

But Schiller shook his head. "You have no reason to get Balk out, but you do have a reason to save GTO from being disbanded by the State Legislature."

"You should know I've never supported the creation of GTO."

"Yes, because it was Pale Rider's idea. And he once framed you and sent you to prison, while the Joker inside him was out of control."

"Neither of those is a problem now," Batman said. "I oppose GTO because it isn't a sustainable model. Once it goes wrong, it'll be a Great Disaster."

"Very farsighted, sir. But are you planning to just watch it be disbanded?"

"Why not?"

"Yes, you could do that." Schiller nodded again.

Batman found talking to Schiller exhausting.

Schiller was not the sort of person who argued for argument's sake. He was not someone who instinctively rebutted every point the other person made whenever he wanted to persuade them.

But he had gone to the opposite extreme: an affirming personality. When he wanted to persuade someone, he instead affirmed all their views. That made it impossible to even find a point to argue against.

When someone had already said you were right, how could you refute him?

Worse still, in negotiations, showing resistance was meant to bargain for better terms, not to genuinely refuse. But Schiller treated every attempt to drive up the price as an actual rejection.

How was anyone supposed to negotiate with that?

With anyone else, the negotiation would not have been strictly necessary. But Batman had already figured out Schiller's pattern of behavior.
