Batman had never seen Gordon in such a sorry state.
As he stood in Gordon's office waiting for him, he saw James Gordon enter through the door, soaked from head to toe. The heating in the Police Department was inadequate, and he was shivering from the cold.
Batman watched him enter in silence, his gaze following him as he asked, "What were you doing?"
"Nothing." Gordon took a deep breath. "I just accidentally fell into the Gotham River and saved someone while I was at it."
"Who?"
"Landon Harvey, who was just bailed out of prison."
"Why was he in the Gotham River?"
Gordon glanced at Batman, and Batman had never seen such a look in his eyes before. It made Batman's heart skip a beat, because he felt that his old friend was starting to become unfamiliar.
"Will he appear in court?" Batman asked.
"I don't know." Gordon went into the Lounge to change. He came back out in a dry uniform, though his hair was still wet. He did not bother drying it and simply collapsed into his chair.
Batman saw that his face was unusually pale, and it was not merely from exhaustion. Something indescribable was devouring him from within.
Gordon closed his eyes, scattered images beginning to flash through his mind.
No one knew that James Gordon, after graduating from the police academy, had held the highest success rate in ground pursuits among his graduating class at the Chicago Police Academy. He was an excellent driver.
After becoming police commissioner, he rarely had cause to use that skill again. But yesterday, he had forced Harvey's car into the river.
Then, standing on the bridge, he had seen Schiller.
Schiller had seen him. Gordon was utterly certain of it; Schiller might even have come chasing after him.
