Batman had not wanted to move, but Nightwing walked in. He looked utterly exhausted, with wounds on his face, yet he still stood before the desk and said, "Things on Lark Street have been dealt with. Seventeen people died, and thirty-six were rescued. We caught the killer, but he only admitted to having a personal grudge against the factory manager."

Gordon showed no expression, neither anger nor sorrow. Nightwing sensed that something was wrong and looked at Gordon searchingly.

Soon, Gordon stood up and looked at Nightwing. "I'll resign as Director. For the time being, keep doing a good job, just as you are now."

"What?!" Nightwing stared at him in disbelief. "You're resigning?! How can you resign at a time like this?? Gotham needs you, Director!!"

Batman looked at Gordon as well. He had not expected Gordon to choose this moment to resign.

"Gotham does need me, but it may not need James Gordon as Director of the Police Department." Gordon lowered his head. "I can't let a fifteen-year-old child bear such responsibility."
