"What exactly is this place?" Kara shook her head, looked in every direction, ran her hand along the wall, and examined the marks her fingers left behind.

They were still heading downward. No one knew how long they had been walking, but the temperature kept rising until even Kryptonians found it somewhat unbearable.

Kara could clearly tell that this was far more than a mine for energy transmission pipelines. They had already passed through three or four experimental levels, and equipment for extracting energy did not require so many scientists.

"My biological father once worked here," Clark said. "He was a scientist specializing in geological exploration and Core Energy research."

"That isn't surprising. Uncle Jor-El was always an expert in that field." Kara gently shook her head. "But I've never heard of this place."

"This was a secret project. Only members of the El family knew about it," Clark said. "It was a legacy left behind by Kryptonians from the previous era."

"You mean the Kryptonian race?"

"Yes. The El family of the previous era had made every possible preparation. They foresaw every possibility that could happen to this planet, so they prepared this."

The two stopped before a passageway at the very bottom. At the other end, Kara saw blazing firelight and felt surging energy.

They flew in together.

What appeared before Kara was the Heart of the Star he had mentioned—a colossal fusion reactor as vast as an independent planet, right beneath their feet.

Yet this scorching, surging fireball did not exist on its own. Across its surface, an immensely complex mechanical shell nearly enveloped the entire core of the planet, gleaming with metallic light.
