Mars, a planet long called Earth's "twin," had been burdened with far too many hopes. In the vast universe, its position and ecosystem were almost as finely balanced as Earth's. For many years, humanity had hoped Mars could become its second home.
The exploration of Mars had never stopped, but limited by the pace of technological development, humanity had never made much progress on the planet. What they did not know was that Mars had long had native inhabitants—and by the time humans began exploring the universe, those natives had already gone extinct.
It was an indescribable tragedy, not only for the Martians, but for humanity as well. The alien life they had dreamed of was so close at hand, yet they had missed each other in such a dramatic fashion.

After Ma'lfak wiped out the Green Martians, most White Martians died as well, but a small number of isolated White Martians survived. They occupied the Green Martians' cities and proclaimed themselves the rightful heirs of Martian civilization.
Unfortunately, their luck was poor. After Mercury Base exploded, the Green Lanterns needed a better base in the Solar System, and they set their sights on Mars City. Ron, the surviving Green Martian with the legal right to inherit the city, agreed to their plan.
The Green Lantern Corps launched a merciless campaign
