After roughly half a day of interning, Mephisto had neither figured out what Schiller did at the asylum nor learned how to handle the work himself. He had only figured out that the patients at this asylum could roughly be divided into three categories: lunatics, youths, and lunatic youths.

The first were generally psychiatric patients from wealthy families. They came in all age groups, though most were relatively young. Their illnesses varied wildly, and most could not care for themselves. Still, even during an episode, they would not cause too much harm.

The second were children from wealthy families. Most of them were not ill at all, or had only mild psychological problems, and had come purely to recuperate. But they were bursting with energy and highly mobile, capable of chasing after the Schiller played by Mephisto all day just to make him tell them stories.

The third were young psychiatric patients admitted as a public service, a requirement imposed by the local community. Every private medical institution with a Psychiatry Department had to accept a certain number of juvenile offenders from its community who had criminal records and mental problems. This group was the most dangerous. Not only were their minds messed up, but they were also highly capable of acting—and no one knew where they had gotten their weapons. They were practically walking sources of danger.

In just half a day, Mephisto had begun to understand why Schiller possessed such a complicated mental state.

Mephisto had arrived a little too late. If he had come half a year earlier, before the asylum had been renovated, there would not have been so many troublesome matters.
