The College of All Souls library preserved quite a large number of occult texts. Outsiders were usually not permitted inside; only renowned occult scholars could come to borrow books. But this was not because occultists felt superior. It was simply to protect ordinary people from the disturbance of occult forces.
"I have a feeling," Jason said, standing before the shelves. "What we're looking for is the kind of hidden book nobody pays attention to. Ideally, something people dismissed as nonsense and left in a corner. Doctor, do you have any ideas?"
"Most of the books here are classics. If you want gossip and fringe theories, you might need to visit the Gotham University Library. Still, we do have some documents whose value has yet to be proven. If you want to look through them, try the room on the left upstairs."
Jason nodded and went straight past the shelves downstairs to the second floor. He did not conduct an extensive search. He merely stood at the doorway for a moment before heading directly toward one row of shelves.
Jason remembered what the elderly man nearing retirement had told him when he applied to be an administrator at the Gotham University Library.
"To be a librarian here, you need neither memory nor patience, but a certain special intuition. Words possess power, and your job is to sense that power without seeing the words themselves. Only then can you help those who have no idea what they are looking for find the books they need."
Jason had not understood those words at first. To him, it had merely been an ordinary part-time job, no different from working at a fast-food restaurant. But he quickly came to understand that Gotham was forever unlike any other place. Here, the importance of a librarian was
