Deathstroke clearly disagreed with Schiller. As he saw it, he was Joseph's biological father. Even if Joseph needed to prepare to join the Justice League, he should have been the one giving Joseph special training. Batman and Schiller both ought to step aside.

But Joseph obviously did not think so. He had a quiet personality and did not like killing. Although, with his own father being an assassin, he probably had no peaceful days ahead of him, he preferred using limited force. His superpower also meant he did not need to rely on too much physical violence.

So between becoming the world's number one mercenary's apprentice and joining the Justice League to learn, he chose the latter. Clearly, he agreed with the idea that "restraint is the foundation of the aesthetics of violence." And whether it was Batman or Schiller, both were practitioners and bywords for that concept.

By comparison, Deathstroke's extreme violence did not really suit his tastes. So when faced with his own father's slightly resentful gaze, Joseph remained unmoved.

"I'll teach you the most basic shooting techniques first," Schiller said, glancing at Deathstroke. "It's hard to imagine a teenager raised in the United States not knowing even the most basic way to fire a handgun."

"There were guns at home, but I wasn't interested in them," Joseph said, shaking his head. "A neighbor once wanted to take me and Rute to the shooting range for fun, but I thought it was too noisy."

"We won't start with a suppressed pistol." Schiller took the Quiet Puppy from his hand and said, "A suppressed pistol has a big effect on how shooting feels. You need to practice with other normal handguns first after you're familiar with them. We'll go to the range and practice basic shooting first."
