In the dimly lit corridor, a corpse lay sprawled across the floor of the narrow stairwell landing. Alfred stood on the steps above, while Kayla stood below.
Kayla put away her pistol. Lowering her head to look at Benjamin's body, she said, "Mr. Pennyworth, you can go take care of your business now. I'll handle things here."
"My business was taking care of him." Alfred walked down the stairs and stopped opposite Kayla. "Valeria, thank you for passing along that intelligence."
Kayla frowned at Alfred, seemingly displeased. She said, "A month ago, I had someone send you word that they were plotting against Wayne Enterprises. Why did you still let him come here?"
Kayla sighed. "This isn't that simple. On the surface, they're investigating the Philby List, but everyone knows that list is outdated information. Other than covering up the CIA's mistakes, it isn't much use."
"We all know the 1980 Economic Crisis left endless damage in its wake, and the East Coast suffered badly as well. But plenty of people profited from it too, including Luthor Corp and Wayne Enterprises."
Those major businessmen who had fallen beneath the tides of the era never stopped wanting to reclaim their former power. Wayne Enterprises and Luthor Corp held far too large a share of the pie, and those wolves had grown green with envy.
"They're truly stupid, Alfred. When I heard their plan, I nearly went mad."
"They actually wanted to gather all the East Coast's prominent figures in one place, then kill the people controlling Wayne Enterprises and Luthor Corp amid the chaos, and pin it on Soviet Union agents..."
Kayla pressed a hand to her forehead. Simply repeating the plan seemed to leave her speechless.
"They actually think that, with all those prominent figures as witnesses, the whole thing
