Lex's butler moved quickly as well. Before long, dinner was ready. During the meal, Clark told Lex about the trouble he had run into. Lex, seated at the head of the table and cutting into his steak, paused for a moment before asking:
"You mean a group of people disguised as KGB agents broke into your dorm room, and then this rat subdued them?... Then they were probably CIA."
But Lex's certainty caught Clark off guard. He asked, "How can you be so sure? What if it wasn't them?"
"Framing the KGB and failing at it—both the motive and the level of competence fit CIA perfectly." Lex continued working on the food on his plate as he ate. "It's not strange that CIA has set its sights on you. You think you were being discreet when you used your powers, but in the eyes of professional agents, you weren't hiding anything at all."
