Perhaps it was some kind of magical connection, but whenever he encountered this kind of incomprehensible language or incantation, Schiller could always decipher the three most important words and gain a great deal of energy from them, like "Nattaru," which he used to curse Nall.

Schiller recalled that because Aisha had not really learned the lyrics, she could only repeat the first line over and over. The incantation they had extracted happened to come from the end of that first line, so as soon as Aisha finished singing it, she could summon the owls.

In that case, the first step toward improving efficiency was complete. Schiller had the nun gather all the children and stop singing the entire song. They would sing only the first line.

As soon as all the children finished the first line, the owls came. Schiller flashed over to clear them out, then they kept singing, and once they finished, he cleared them out again.

But the first line was still a little long. The lyrics were few and the melody was not difficult, but it was still nowhere near as fast as three syllables. Once all the children had memorized the first line, the nun began teaching them how to repeat those three syllables.

By that point, though, many of the children had already run out of patience. When they had been singing a song, they could sing one line and skip the next, coast along in the crowd, or secretly chat while everyone else sang loudly.

But once it became three short syllables, there was no way to slack off. If they did not sing properly, any off-key sounds became extremely obvious.

These children had never had much patience to begin with. Learning the song had already used up quite a bit of it,
