Background / History
Artoria was the legitimate child of Uther Pendragon, King of Britain. She concealed her sex and bore the identity of King Arthur, dedicating herself completely to Britain after drawing the Sword in the Stone at age fifteen. Her identity as king became inseparable from the kingdom itself, leaving her burdened by its eventual fall and determined to use the Holy Grail to change that history. 712 735
During the Fourth Holy Grail War, Artoria was summoned as Saber. Gilles de Rais mistakenly identified her as Jeanne d'Arc, prompting her to formally disclose her true name and lineage. 712 The debate at the Kings' Banquet, especially criticism from Rider and Archer, intensified her doubts over her philosophy of self-sacrificing kingship. Allen later encouraged her to continue as both king and warrior rather than let regret dull her resolve. 733 735
Her first Holy Grail War ended without fulfilling her wish, and she returned to the Throne of Heroes. Allen later summoned her again using Avalon as a catalyst. Unlike other Servants, Artoria retained memories of her previous Holy Grail Wars because she had not truly died. 756 758 762
When her wish to alter Britain's past failed once more, Artoria accepted that changing history would only create a parallel world. She renounced her identity as king, swore loyalty to Allen as his knight, and received a new immortal body through the Third Magic. 778 779
Appearance
Artoria is a short, blonde-haired knight with emerald-green eyes. She is frequently seen in silver armor, though she also adopts local clothing and disguises when operating in unfamiliar worlds. 758 1267 1389
- Golden hair, often styled with a ponytail while leading Desert Dawn. 1389
- Emerald-green eyes. 735 758
- Usually carries her holy sword, often concealed by the Wind King Barrier. 773 779
- Used the male identity Arthur while infiltrating and later ruling the Re-Estize Kingdom. 791 798
Personality
Artoria is principled, protective, and intensely committed to justice. She instinctively acts to protect civilians, whether from monsters, criminal syndicates, Yoma, or invading armies. This moral clarity can make her naïve toward political complexity, but she is capable of learning from allies such as Allen and Princess Lana. 780 792 1266
Her earlier life was defined by self-denial: she viewed herself primarily as Britain’s king rather than an individual. Her experiences after the Holy Grail War gradually help her reject this burden, develop her own knightly path, and seek fulfillment in helping people in the present rather than rewriting the past. 735 778 825 1303
Despite her solemnity, Artoria has an enormous appetite and eagerly explores unfamiliar foods during her travels. 747 765 770 784
