Rorschach, wearing a black peaked cap, appeared at apartment 403.
A neatly packaged box was tucked under one of his arms.
Knock knock knock.
His other hand rapped on the door before him.
No answer.
Patient as ever, Rorschach knocked again.
Knock knock knock.
After a brief wait.
A cautious voice finally sounded from inside the door:
"Who is it?"
Rorschach narrowed his eyes slightly and said lightly:
"It's me, Rorschach!"
The words had barely fallen.
A flurry of panicked footsteps retreated, quickly moving away from the door.
Hearing the commotion, Rorschach couldn't help but sigh.
Clearly, Eugene had developed quite a psychological shadow from his visits.
Dozens of seconds later.
As footsteps approached again.
The door cracked open a sliver.
Through the gap, a pair of eyes, wary and tinged with fear, appeared.
"I, I really haven't done anything bad lately! I've been staying home obediently, recovering from my injuries!"
Rorschach blinked, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth:
"Eugene, I'm not here to cause you trouble. I have business."
Yet Eugene's eyes were full of suspicion:
"Really?"
Rorschach's face darkened, and he barked:
"Open the door!"
"Okay."
Clatter—
In an instant, the chain slid down.
Eugene yanked the door open.
Revealing the neck brace around his throat, as well as his right arm and left foot, both encased in plaster casts.
Eugene strained to bow and scrape, forcing a reluctant smile onto his face as he gestured for Rorschach to enter.
Rorschach nodded and stepped into the apartment.
Before he could state his purpose.
Eugene, sweat beading on his forehead, spoke first:
"Rorschach, I haven't breathed a word about your affairs to anyone... Ever since I found out those gangs were kidnapping kids, I wouldn't sell you out even if I were beaten to death!"
"Thanks, but that's not why I'm here..."
Standing still, Rorschach took in Eugene's injuries and spoke.
Then, he pulled out the box tucked under his arm.
It was a phone gift box stamped with the Iron Man logo.
"I came to give you a new phone. Do you believe that?"
"Uh, not really..."
Eugene stared at Rorschach in shock and uncertainty.
A hint of unease flickered across his expression.
Seeing how tall and sturdy Rorschach was now.
With muscles under his clothes even bulkier than his own.
Not wanting to get beaten, Eugene quickly forced a sheepish laugh:
"Rorschach, are you looking for me to help with something? Don't worry, I know what a mess I used to be, and I know my own worth..."
But Rorschach shook his head slightly.
His gaze fixed on Eugene, his expression sincere as he spoke:
"Before, I was blinded by rage and handled things too harshly... So, I specially bought a new phone co-branded with Iron Man to give back to you, as an apology."
As soon as the words fell, the sheepish grin on Eugene's face gradually faded.
He studied Rorschach for a long moment.
Then suddenly shook his head with a laugh:
"I'll just take it that you came to apologize... But I'm still sure you actually have something to ask of me."
With that, Eugene shifted his feet.
Limped over to the side of the sofa, and slowly sat down.
Rorschach raised an eyebrow, then followed and sat across from Eugene.
No sooner had he sat than he handed the phone box to Eugene.
Eugene, frowning slightly, took it but didn't choose to open it.
Instead, he set it lightly on his thigh, the plaster cast on his right hand pressing down on the box.
Eugene hesitated for a moment, then asked:
"Rorschach, if you have something to say, just say it straight. If there's anything I can help with, I'll do my best."
"Alright, then I won't stand on ceremony."
Rorschach narrowed his eyes and nodded.
"Is your network wide enough? Do you know anyone in the gray industries? I need some intelligence."
"Ah, I'm not bragging, but I've got friends all over New York... Gray industries? Which aspect do you mean? Counterfeit cash? Fake documents? Or something else..."
Eugene blinked a few times, asking very cautiously.
Rorschach didn't hide it, cutting straight to the chase:
"I need guns, a lot of guns! The more the better!"
"If I can't get a big batch all at once, the weekly supply can't be less than a hundred... Of course, since it's a long-term purchase, the price needs to be more favorable too."
"Officer! I'm a good man! I don't run with gangs! I don't smuggle!"
But Rorschach's frankness made Eugene misunderstand.
Eugene suddenly raised his voice, shouting loudly.
At the same time, his gaze darted toward the door, as if waiting for something to happen.
Rorschach was taken aback for a moment, then understood why Eugene reacted that way.
He waved his hand and sighed:
"I'm not carrying any listening devices, and I'm not fishing for the cops!"
Rorschach explained himself several times.
Only then did he dispel Eugene's concerns.
After that, Eugene, still frowning, grinned and said:
"Rorschach, I remember when I got fired, you hadn't even graduated high school yet, right? What do you need so many guns for? That many guns could start a small war... You planning to become a middleman?"
Rorschach smiled faintly and said nothing.
Eugene, looking troubled, kept studying Rorschach.
His expression shifted back and forth.
He hesitated for a long time before speaking cautiously:
"I can't make you any promises. I'll just do my best... After all, I'm just a small-time thug who hasn't even joined a gang. I just happen to know a lot of people..."
Rorschach nodded, showing he understood.
He wasn't counting entirely on Eugene.
If it worked out, great; if not, he'd find another way.
Rorschach and Eugene talked a bit longer.
After agreeing on a way to contact each other, Rorschach stood up to leave.
As the door closed.
Eugene limped back and collapsed onto the sofa.
His gaze unconsciously fell on the phone box with the prominent Iron Man logo.
After stewing in his emotions for a while.
Eugene suddenly let out a sigh:
"It's been a long time since anyone gave me a gift..."
With a complicated expression, Eugene pulled an old-fashioned keypad phone out from under his arm cast.
He planned to contact a friend to inquire about Rorschach.
Just then, the apartment door was knocked on once again.
Knock knock knock.
Eugene was slightly startled.
Rorschach came back?
Regretted giving him the phone and wanted to take it back?
Muttering inwardly, Eugene struggled to his feet again.
Limping, he made his way to the door.
However, when he opened it.
Standing before Eugene was a tall, unfamiliar figure.
A woman over one meter ninety.
Fair-skinned, with blonde hair and blue eyes—a Slavic woman.
At first glance.
Her physique was even more robust than Eugene's, who was a man, and she exuded a mixed aesthetic of strength and elegance.
Before a bewildered Eugene could ask anything.
The Slavic woman with delicate features suddenly spoke in a cold tone:
"Are you Eugene? I'm Sergei's mother."
"He's been missing for a week... Do you know where he is?"
The moment the words fell, a chill ran down Eugene's spine, and cold sweat broke out on his back!
