The reason Kane had contacted Cruze was precisely because he wanted Cruze to make a trip to Earth and investigate the situation within Earth Unified. Although Earth Unified still outwardly maintained its original respect toward the fleet, it was simply too vast, an extremely complex union of interests. Not everyone in every faction regarded the fleet as their superior.
Moreover, while Earth Unified controlled the greatest Military Strength, its actual control over other regions was not particularly strong. Yet there were always people thinking of turning New Unified into the true ruler of the galaxy. More often than not, though, they were unable to make any progress because of all sorts of messy matters, such as conflicting interests.
Forced to yield to the fleet under temporary pressure, and with the fleet offering things enough to make most people's eyes turn red—especially the Longevity Drug—the fleet could continue maintaining its detached status and position as leader. But there would always be fools and ambitious men who wanted more. Once they believed the time was right, they would stop at nothing to take everything they wanted from others. The fact that they had concealed intelligence from the fleet already more or less pointed to a problem.
Cruze nodded lightly in thought. "What do you want me to do?"
Kane said, "Even without investigating, we can guess that part of Unified is dissatisfied with our detached position and covets everything we possess. Unlike the other fleets, which remain under Unified's control no matter what, we sit directly above Unified's head. We also possess things that make the leaders of every regional power across the galaxy green with envy. Beyond force, that is an important reason why those
