Elder Gong lived near Zhangwei Mountain, where he earned supplemental Immortal Crystals by harvesting and processing Snow-Accumulating Pines. He guided newly ascended Xu Chunniang through the mountain’s dangerous cold mist and cliff paths, first assessing whether she could safely keep pace with him before allowing her to join the work 966 970.

Though he preferred a modest, stable existence, he had previously been exiled to Zhangwei Mountain after offending a connected Earth Immortal. The resulting compensation costs destroyed his opportunity to attempt a Heavenly Immortal breakthrough at the time 975 1021.

He became one of Xu Chunniang’s earliest allies in the Immortal Realm. He lent her Immortal Crystals, brought her to Floating Jade City, offered practical advice about the Fighting Arena and influential powers, and later arranged entry passes for Xu Chunniang and Little White in Chang Jing Heaven 971 998 999 1021 1022.

After returning to Chang Jing Heaven, Elder Gong was reassigned to the Immortal-Demon Battlefield. An old friend betrayed him by influencing his transfer and reconnaissance assignment, leaving him and Xu Chunniang vulnerable to Commander Luo Jun’s retaliation 1028 1030 1031. More than a century later, Elder Gong had reached the Heavenly Immortal realm and served as a patrol officer in the Third Heaven. When Xu Chunniang returned as an Immortal King, he resigned from his post and agreed to accompany her to the Fourth Heaven 1266 1267.

Elder Gong is practical, cautious, and highly conscious of the financial burden of cultivation. He initially advocated steady work on Zhangwei Mountain over Xu Chunniang’s dangerous Fighting Arena career, believing a few years of harvesting Snow-Accumulating Pines could provide a safer route out of poverty 975.

He is also observant and surprisingly forward-looking. Recognizing Xu Chunniang’s unusual ability early, he offered her guidance on navigating the lower heavens’ power structures and warned that Little White could become a vulnerability if hostile forces targeted him 998 999.

Despite his complaints, self-deprecation, and occasional regret over missed betting opportunities, he is loyal to those he accepts as his own. He repeatedly assists Xu Chunniang without demanding repayment, worries about her opponents, and accepts her later protection without false pride 1003 1012 1276.

After witnessing Xu Chunniang defeat Fu Yuan, Elder Gong realizes that her strength far exceeds his expectations. Regretting his failure to bet on her, he nevertheless chooses to guide her through the political dangers accompanying her rising fame 998 999.

Reunion in the Third Heaven

After Xu Chunniang becomes an Immortal King, Elder Gong reunites with her at Shuitian Stream. Rather than envy her extraordinary progress, he is openly happy for her and accepts her invitation to leave his patrol position behind and accompany her to the Fourth Heaven 1267.
