Background and History
Tang Chen was the Clear Sky Sect's sect master and a Level 99 Limit Douluo renowned for the Clear Sky Hammer. Before reaching Sea God Island, he defeated the Level 98 Peerless Douluo Chen Xun, an outcome that led to rumors that Chen Xun had lost the title of the world's strongest Weapon Spirit master and vanished in shame. 105
He travelled to Sea God Island with Qian Daoliu to seek greater power. There, he challenged Bo Saixi after Qian Daoliu was decisively defeated. Tang Chen's Clear Sky Hammer and battle spirit allowed him to contest her more fiercely, but Sea God's power gave Bo Saixi the decisive advantage on the island. 2 3 He later attempted the Nine Heavens Profound Steps, reaching the 787th step before falling back down in a battered state. 5 6
Tang Chen sought Sea God's Nine Trials and initially believed that a God Position was the final step between himself and godhood. His defeat and imprisonment on Sea God Island forced him to recognize the gulf between mortal power and divine power; after escaping with Qian Daoliu, he vowed to surpass the gods by his own means. 7 8
At the Sea Exchange, Tang Chen pursued Hua Luo Can Hong, an Immortal Herb capable of altering spirit power and spirit skills at the risk of scattering spirit rings. He eventually used a petal of the herb to enter sudden enlightenment and begin comprehending the Great Sumeru Hammer's Explode Ring technique. 15 33
His conflict with the Sea Charm Tribe revealed that he had once loved Mei Luo'er, the tribe's former saintess. Luo'er had left him to fulfill her duty, and Tang Chen had never learned that she was pregnant with his son, Tang Po. Faced with the tribe's hostility, Tang Chen set aside his usual pride, appealed to Su Mutian for help, and offered his life in service in exchange for assistance. 21 22
After Su Mutian arranged for Luo'er and Tang Po to live on Sea God Island, Tang Chen secretly visited his son but did not reveal himself. He left Su Mutian a letter expressing remorse for the earlier attack on Sea God Island, then returned to the continent, closed the Clear Sky Sect, and committed himself to cultivation and reform. 29
Tang Chen spent years in seclusion refining Explode Ring. The repeated cycle of detonating and restoring spirit rings aged him considerably, but his technique eventually allowed him to unleash power beyond the Limit Douluo realm. 33 Thirty years after his departure, he announced the Clear Sky Sect's reemergence and returned to Sea God Island to reunite with his family. 111 113
On Sea God Island, Tang Chen fought Bo Saixi again and revealed the Nine Ring Simultaneous Explosion. Su Mutian intervened before the clash could fully resolve, leaving the battle inconclusive. 114 115 Tang Chen subsequently began teaching Tang Hao and Tang Xiao the Clear Sky Sect's hammer techniques. 115
Qian Daoliu later attacked Tang Chen while he was focused on life with Luo'er. Tang Chen repeatedly used Explode Ring in the ensuing battle, shattering his spirit rings and falling into a deep sleep. 117 By the time Qian Daoliu returned years later, Tang Chen's accumulated injuries and incomplete recovery had reduced him to roughly Level 98. 190

Personality
Tang Chen is intensely proud, competitive, and driven by a lifelong desire to reach divine power. He was willing to challenge Sea God Island's strongest defenders, tamper with his spirit rings, and risk his life in pursuit of a path beyond Level 99. 4 15 27
Despite his arrogance, he can show humility when confronted by consequences he cannot solve through strength. He respectfully faced the Sea Charm Tribe elders, lowered his head to Su Mutian for help, and openly admitted his inability to resolve Luo'er's situation alone. 18 22
His devotion to Luo'er and Tang Po became a central weakness as well as a source of change. He accepted Su Mutian's guidance, chose long-term seclusion over immediate violence, and later sought to make amends as a father and grandfather. 29 113 115
