Background / History

Poisoning and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Dugu Bo’s Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor produces poison so potent that even the evolved Martial Soul cannot fully contain it. Excess venom enters his body, causing recurring toxic outbreaks. The Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well suppresses further erosion but does not repair the damage already inflicted. During a full-moon night, Zhu Zhuqing hears his screams and later sees him emerge pale and barely able to support himself. His attachment to Dugu Yan is what keeps him enduring the pain 24 50.

His Martial Soul’s evolution had also produced an Inner Core, but he initially understood it only as a vessel capable of storing half his Soul Power. Zhu Zhuqing secretly watches him use it to absorb ice-and-fire Soul Power, gaining inspiration for her own Soul Core research without his knowledge 26 50.

Treatment and Alliance with Zhu Zhuqing

When Zhu Zhuqing returns to repay him for the medicinal herbs she took, Dugu Bo initially mistakes her golden aura for an Angel Martial Soul. After recognizing her strength and intentions, he welcomes her into his garden. Her revelation that she knows about his poisoning briefly provokes fear and killing intent, but the prospect of treatment persuades him to cooperate 48 49.

Zhu Zhuqing presents three solutions: forge a poison-resistant body with two immortal herbs, combine poison storage in a Soul Bone with Aromatic Silk Beauty, or use his existing Inner Core as an artificial venom gland. The third method offers a solution that can extend beyond the grandfather and granddaughter. Dugu Bo promises three favors and agrees that the Jade Phosphor Clan will keep the Inner Core condensation method secret 49 50.

Zhu Zhuqing exchanges two favors for the Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch and several immortal herbs, leaving one outstanding. Before entering seclusion, Dugu Bo asks her to protect Dugu Yan; she accepts without demanding another favor. His subsequent cultivation resolves his accumulated poisoning and raises him to Level 93 51 56.

Break with the Heaven Dou Empire

Dugu Bo intervenes when Zhu Zhuqing attacks Prince Xue Xing, whose earlier rescue had saved him from Chrysanthemum Douluo’s pursuit. His defensive shield fails, and he takes nearly all the damage meant for Xue Xing. Once he learns that the prince had harassed Zhu Zhuqing, he refuses to continue protecting him and severs his ties with the Heaven Dou Empire 56 57 58.

He attempts to mend his relationship with Zhu Zhuqing through an apology and a full-power spar. Their match ends in a draw, though he is left bruised and in considerable pain. Zhu Zhuqing also advises him to obtain an External Soul Bone—or, failing that, a Right Arm Bone—to help treat Dugu Yan 58 59 60.

Extorting Tang Hao and Pledging Allegiance

Outside Suotuo City, Dugu Bo identifies Xiao Wu as a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast and considers offering her to Zhu Zhuqing as compensation. Tang Hao intervenes, but Dugu Bo detects his severe internal weakness. Their confrontation escalates when Tang Hao threatens Dugu Yan, prompting Dugu Bo to use Tang San and Xiao Wu’s identities as leverage 74 75.

Dugu Bo ultimately obtains the Great Sumeru Hammer manual in exchange for an oath not to disclose the incident or harm Tang San and the others. He later presents the manual to Zhu Zhuqing. Having offended Tang Hao, he also returns to the well to cultivate and studies medicinal properties and herb cultivation, reorganizing his garden 76 83 84.

Learning that Zhu Zhuqing possesses Titled Douluo-level combat strength despite being only thirteen and Level 59 convinces him to kneel and submit. He subsequently addresses her as “Young Mistress,” helps temper her body, and accepts her painful strengthening regimen for his own Ice Fire Golden Body 85 86 87.

Service under Zhu Zhuqing

Dugu Bo supports Zhu Zhuqing against Tang Hao, combining his strengthened body, domain, shields, poison, and petrification. Tang Hao eventually breaks free through brute force and Ring Detonation, forcing Zhu Zhuqing to order Dugu Bo back and take over. Afterward, Dugu Bo remains to guard her Soul Ring and keep Ning Fengzhi and Chen Xin at a distance 90 91 92 93 94.

He later extracts Tang San’s Eight Spider Lances while Tang San is unconscious and gives them to Dugu Yan. He also obtains an Earth Dragon Golden Gourd for her, transforming her Martial Soul into the Jade Phosphor Dragon. His service includes carrying Zhu Zhuqing into the Clear Sky Sect, leading the assault, and engaging Jin E during her confrontation with Spirit Hall 110 112 113 116 117 118.

Bibi Dong subsequently attacks him and Dugu Yan over the External Soul Bone. Her Eternal Creation breaks his defenses, but he escapes with his granddaughter and reaches Star Luo Imperial City, collapsing only after finding Zhu Zhuqing. She stabilizes him and later tells Dugu Yan that she has avenged him by killing Bibi Dong once 129 138.

Afterward, he attends the Star Luo tournament preliminaries and is ordered to capture Xiao Wu after the competition. By the Spirit City tournament’s later events, he has reached Level 95 and clears the arena while guarding Zhu Zhuqing’s Fifth Soul Ring 145 157 180.

Appearance

  • Elderly features: Described with an old face; during his untreated poison outbreaks, he becomes pale and must brace himself against a wall 24 48.
  • Eyes: Green light flickers in his eyes, while red and blue hues emerge when he unleashes his strengthened Martial Soul 50 86.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: A seventy-meter emerald serpent with bronze-textured scales and a crest resembling a jeweled crown. The Ice Fire Golden Body can cover it in golden light 90 112.

Personality

Dugu Bo is reclusive, suspicious of threats, and acutely protective of Dugu Yan. Before his treatment, she is his reason to keep living; afterward, he remains vigilant while she refines her Inner Core and seeks resources that will secure her survival and future strength 24 51 74 118.

He respects strength and honesty. Zhu Zhuqing’s voluntary return to repay him earns his goodwill, while her knowledge and overwhelming potential turn that gratitude into allegiance. During her body-tempering exercise, he shows concern rather than coveting her method, and later postpones a reunion with Dugu Yan to prioritize his mistress’s business 48 85 86 89.

His loyalty does not make him merciful toward enemies. He exploits Tang Hao’s injuries, threatens to expose dangerous secrets, and removes Tang San’s Soul Bone without regard for the resulting wounds. Nevertheless, his boldness is calculated: he remains wary of Tang Hao’s dying counterattack and Chen Xin’s ability to launch a surprise attack 75 76 94 110.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

  • Martial Soul Possession: Manifests an enormous serpent phantom. His directly shown Soul Ring configuration is two yellow, two purple, and five black 48.
  • Seventh Soul Skill — Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms him into a giant serpent used for combat, transport, and guarding Zhu Zhuqing’s Soul Rings 60 94 112.
  • Close combat: Uses serpent-tail strikes and whip kicks, supported by veteran reactions and the enhanced durability of his golden body 59 90.

Poison Manipulation

  • Poison Array: Protects his residence with lethal poisonous mist. Zhu Zhuqing bypasses it through Shadow Stealth and later dissolves it with her Light Martial Soul 24 48.
  • First three Soul Skills: Release red, blue, and purple poisons, filling a three-hundred-meter area with gas and forming three hundred-meter-long venomous snakes 59.
  • Ice Fire Poison: Adds extreme ice and fire toxins to his existing Mixed Poison; these can freeze, burn, and corrode the manifestations of Tang Hao’s killing intent 91.
  • Limit: Zhu Zhuqing’s Dark Element domain suppresses and repels his poison 60.

Poison Pearl / Inner Core

  • Origin: Condensed when his Martial Soul evolved into the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor 26 50.
  • Storage: Holds half his Soul Power and can absorb ice-and-fire Soul Power from the well 26 50.
  • Detoxification: Functions as a venom gland, containing excess poison that would otherwise damage his body 50 56.
  • Soul Core distinction: Its stored Soul Power lacks the spiral rotation characteristic of a true Soul Core 26.
  • Risk: Expelling it noticeably weakens him; damaging it while outside his body would leave him dangerously vulnerable 26 50.

Ice Fire Golden Body

  • Acquisition: Developed through the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass, Infernal Delicate Apricot, and refinement in the well 56 74.
  • Benefits: Provides resistance to ice, fire, and poison while greatly improving his physical defense 49 87.
  • Avatar integration: Extends its protection over his Martial Soul Avatar 90.
  • Limit: Bibi Dong’s Eternal Creation penetrates his defenses and seriously wounds him 129.

Fourth Soul Skill — Jade Phosphorous Fangs Forms enormous snake heads to attack and trap opponents. Zhu Zhuqing physically prevents one from closing its jaws 59.
