The place Nimrod had chosen to "court death" was one of the way stations along the Great Maw route. In the future, it would be called the Temple.
There were many way stations along this crisis-ridden passage, offering voyagers a chance to evade the fierce Warp Storms.
Among these stations, some were relatively "safe," while others were even more dangerous than the Warp Storms.
The Temple was one of the relatively "safe" stations. Located at the edge of the Halo, it provided a resting area amid the Warp Storms.
In the future, ships traveling to and from the Great Maw, when encountering fluctuations in the Great Maw, would head there for refuge instead of returning to Port Wander.
There were even devout Rogue Traders who regarded the Temple as the physical manifestation of the Emperor's Tarot and would deliberately travel to the Temple region, staying for a day in the hope of receiving the God-Emperor's blessing throughout the perilous journey.
But once they approached the Temple's orbit, the dangerous asteroid belt was nothing. If they interfered with any of the stone spheres in the area, it would lead to misfortune and sudden death.
Nimrod was interested in the Temple because those stone spheres might have been placed in that region of space by some ancient god.
Which god was it?
And why had that being placed so many stone spheres, each hundreds of meters in diameter, there?
Nimrod was very curious about the secrets within. In his assessment, the creations of an ancient god vanished in the tides of history were dangerous, yet still less so than another way station along the route—the Cursed Witch World—so he decided to stop by and investigate.
