Outside Chang Sheng County Bank, Jing Liuli stared at the bank before her, her brows furrowing as an inexplicable unease rose within her.

The stone lion on the left was missing half an ear, the jagged break resembling congealed blood scabs. The stone ball beneath the right lion's paw was split with spiderweb-like cracks, with half a faded blue work-jacket scrap caught in one of the fissures.
Several villagers carrying vegetable baskets passed by. Seeing them stop, they hesitated, their eyes full of curiosity, but soon walked away expressionlessly, as though the area around the bank was some Forbidden Ground that could not be stared at for too long.
"Come on. You'll understand soon enough."
