Ch. 981Surrendering one after another
Plot points and events
- The Purple Cloud Palace’s forces overwhelm the Heaven-Severing Sword Sect. Lin Feng defeats its leader, Jian Wuji, while his allies and troops inflict devastating losses across the battlefield.
- With his sword heart shattered and his sect nearly destroyed, Jian Wuji surrenders.
- The defeat prompts other factions to react: the Heaven Sword Pavilion submits under Lin Feng’s conditions, while the Azure Jade Altar offers gifts and is allowed to remain neutral so long as it does not aid the radicals.
- Bloodshadow Ancestor flees but is caught and killed by Fire Dragon, ending the Bloodshadow Gate. The Black Baleful Sect also surrenders, and Lin Feng orders its master to help lead the campaign against the Soul-Slaying Hall.
- Within seven days, more than thirty factions submit and over twenty declare neutrality. Lin Feng establishes his headquarters at the conquered sect and prepares to undermine the remaining radical factions rather than attack immediately.
- Three days later, fear and division emerge inside the Soul-Slaying Hall. Lin Feng sees an opportunity to begin his next move.
Character developments and interactions
- Lin Feng demonstrates overwhelming strength and strategic patience. He offers defeated or wavering factions terms that preserve their leaders’ lives while demanding obedience, tribute, military support, or intelligence.
- Jian Wuji goes from confident attacker to defeated, terrified surrenderer after Lin Feng breaks both his defenses and his sword heart.
- Lin Chen leads the Shocking Star Guards effectively and learns from his father’s strategy of “attacking hearts” through fear and internal division.
- Lin Feng’s allies each contribute distinctive strengths: Dong Xuan suppresses three opponents; Ding Yun reads an enemy’s weakness and disables him; Fire Dragon dominates his foes and pursues the fleeing Bloodshadow Ancestor; Xuan Ming traps enemies in reincarnation illusions; and the Azure Water Golden Toad ambushes enemy fighters.
- The Black Baleful Ancestor changes from a radical faction’s subordinate to a frightened but useful guide after seeing the Heaven-Severing Sword Sect’s defeat.
Significant themes
- Power and deterrence: A decisive victory changes the choices of factions far beyond the battlefield.
- Submission and pragmatic rule: Lin Feng combines mercy with firm obligations, offering survival in exchange for loyalty and service.
- Strategy over brute force: Rather than immediately assault the remaining enemies, he aims to exploit fear and factional distrust from within.
- Collective strength: The coordinated abilities of Lin Feng’s allies and army make the victory overwhelming.
