"Is that why you joined the Spirit Pagoda?" Gu Yue asked curiously.
"That's right. You have to do something with your life, don't you? Think of it as doing good and building virtue."
"Your ideals are pretty lofty. What if the person harming Soul Beasts is a god? Or not that far off—a Titled Douluo?"
"Then I'd catch them and judge them according to the circumstances."
"Could you beat them?" Gu Yue chuckled.
"And aren't you afraid that if Soul Beasts grow stronger, they'll pose a danger to humans?"
"Soul Beasts may be somewhat foolish, but some of them gain intelligence too. Only through cooperation and mutual benefit between both sides can this world endure."
You're the foolish one. Gu Yue took a deep breath and calmed herself.
"Do you crave power?"
"Do you crave power?"
Meng Li lay in bed asleep, his expression twisted in pain. In his dream, a woman's voice kept repeating those words like a broken record.
"I crave it, all right? Please stop repeating that sentence." Meng Li grew impatient from hearing it over and over in his dream.
The woman's voice was lovely, but listening to it endlessly was no good either.
"Fine. Go back to the Spirit Pagoda in Aolai City first thing tomorrow morning. Someone is waiting for you there!"
"Remember, you must go!" The woman's voice abruptly changed its tune in the dream.
"What if I don't go..." Meng Li replied.
"If you don't, you'll fall into an endless abyss! And you'll keep hearing my voice."
Terrifying!
The voice suddenly stopped. Meng Li jolted awake from his dream, and it was already daylight.
"What's going on? I clearly only just fell asleep, yet it's already morning. That dream yesterday was too strange... Should I go back or not?" Meng Li brushed his teeth, looking at his reflection in the mirror. His eyes were bloodshot.
After breakfast, he ultimately decided to go back. Better safe than sorry. It would only delay him for a day, and he could visit Teacher Meng while he was there.
With that in mind, he asked Wu Changkong for a day off and rode a Hovering Aircraft toward Aolai City.
A little after eleven in the morning, he arrived at his destination, the Aolai Spirit Pagoda. He was not sure whether anyone was truly waiting for him, but he came anyway. Besides, he had just reached level fifty, so he wanted to test his luck at the Spirit Pagoda and see whether he could get a better Soul Spirit.
The moment he reached the entrance, Meng Li saw someone in a Spirit Master uniform sitting outside.
At the sight of that person, Meng Li felt inexplicably uneasy. He could not help wondering whether the person before him was even alive.
"You finally came!" The female Spirit Master raised her head. He could not see her face clearly, but she had an excellent figure and wore a fox mask. Her eyes were blood-red, and her voice was enchanting.
Someone really was waiting for me. Meng Li's heart tightened. If she could enter his dreams and deliver a message, then it meant his growth had been under someone's control all along!
"Who are you?" Meng Li gathered his courage and stepped forward.
"You don't need to know. You only need to know that you should grow stronger. Our clan leader thinks highly of you." The Spirit Master rose to her feet, her blood-jewel eyes fixed on Meng Li. Then she tossed him something resembling a Soul Spirit orb.
The orb was pure red, with Soul Power radiating from it. It seemed to contain something extraordinary!
"What's inside?" Meng Li asked.
"A Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirit! You need it at your current level!" the woman said.
Thousand-year Soul Spirits had already reached astronomical prices, while ten-thousand-year Soul Spirits had to be captured personally. Yet she was simply giving him a hundred-thousand-year Soul Spirit? Wasn't that too generous?
"Why are you giving me this?" Meng Li asked in confusion.
"I told you, our clan leader thinks highly of you! He intends to nurture you. Your talent will surely accomplish that great mission!"
"The Soul Spirit is in your hands. The choice is yours."
Faced with a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirit, Meng Li did not refuse. Since someone powerful enough to cover the sky with one hand had set their sights on him, resisting would be worse than going with the flow. In any case, he could not resist.
The mission that person mentioned was surely earth-shattering, but by then, he would have means to protect himself. Accepting it now brought only benefits and no harm.
Though he knew there was a scheme behind it, who could refuse a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirit?
Just as Meng Li was about to say something, the masked female Spirit Master had already vanished.
Looking at the Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirit in his hand, Meng Li rented a room to avoid any unexpected complications and eagerly opened the Soul Spirit orb.
A white feather drifted out, yet blood-red light radiated from it!
"Why is it a feather again?" Meng Li stared at it in confusion.
The feather flew into the air and shot into Meng Li's forehead. The Sacred Winged Angel Martial Soul appeared behind him. Just as when he had absorbed the first feather, a white feather glowing red entered the angel's temple.
When Meng Li absorbed this Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirit at level fifty, he felt no pain at all. It was as ordinary as breathing.
At that moment, throughout the parts of Meng Li's body that he could not see, every tissue within him underwent a massive transformation. His blood, once red, turned golden. His pupils changed as well, taking on a faint golden hue.
Meng Li sat cross-legged, sensing the changes within his body. His Soul Power had increased by at least a third. When he threw a punch into the air, the sound of tearing air grew even louder!
"I really don't know what will happen in the future. Maybe I'm just a lamb being raised in a pen. What if, one day, the owner wants to take my body?" Meng Li muttered to himself.
A Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirit... This clan leader was truly generous. What he wanted in return naturally would not be simple. Feeling the changes in his body, Meng Li could not help worrying.
"Forget it. Think positively. Maybe I'm just worrying for nothing. Just as that person said, only by becoming stronger can I keep my fate from being manipulated by others!"
That night, Meng Li returned to Eastsea City. It was already late. In the afternoon, he had gone to Red Mountain Academy to have a meal with Lin Ximeng.
This time, Teacher Lin did not nag and scold him as she had in the past. Instead, she told him a great deal about how to conduct himself, then comforted him over Na'er's departure.
Meeting an old acquaintance again and seeing this attitude, Meng Li felt a faint sense of unfamiliarity. He still preferred the old Lin Ximeng who used to scold him.
That night, Meng Li recorded everything that had happened that day. Lying in bed and staring at the white ceiling, he unexpectedly felt lonely.
Outside, he had friends. But in the dormitory, he was all alone. Looking back on the past, where was there even a home to speak of?
His former home had already become distant. He had not seen his family in nearly four years, nor had he seen Na'er in half a year.
His combined age had already exceeded twenty-five. By rights, he should not have been so sentimental, yet he could not stop himself.
"The road ahead is still lonely!"
"Gu Yue, will the person walking alongside me be you?" Meng Li suddenly thought of the girl who often followed behind him.
He was not foolish. He could naturally tell that Gu Yue treated him differently from others. Toward others, she carried a trace of pride and aloofness, unwilling to say even a few extra words. Yet toward him, she was excessively enthusiastic.
But they were both still young, so they could only tuck away those unusual feelings in their hearts.
"Let nature take its course." Meng Li took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Training still awaited him tomorrow!
