Madara used his infinite power from Impure World Reincarnation to slaughter Kumogakure while battling Obito, leaving only a few dozen shinobi alive. With Zero-Tails' urging, Obito opened the Box of Ultimate Bliss and absorbed Madara in black mist, beginning his revival.
