Background / History
Meng Yuan was a refugee and vagrant who survived by working as a livestock castrator. At Pasture Manor, Old Man Jiang taught him the craft; Meng Yuan learned quickly, regained his health, and began strengthening his Essence Flame through the work's by-products 4 34.
He entered the Royal Residence's martial training system through diligence rather than background. Under Nie Yannian's regimen, he trained his stance, strength, endurance, and later saber work, opening acupoints at an exceptional pace 13 19. His advancement allowed him to return to Pasture Manor as a Royal Residence Guard and bring Jiang Shuanyou and Jiang Tang to live in the city 31.
Appearance
Meng Yuan is repeatedly described as notably handsome, with his appearance improving alongside his cultivation. After early Essence Flame growth, his face becomes rosier and his eyes brighter; later body tempering leaves his skin clear and his body marked by faint currents of fire within the muscle fibers 15 330.
- Initially has a pale, weakened refugee's body, but rapidly regains strength through Essence Flame cultivation 4.
- Has clear, bright eyes and a noticeably fairer complexion after opening acupoints 15.
- Carries himself as a saber-wielding martial officer, often traveling on his Little Red Horse 31 75.
- After repeated body tempering, possesses unusually resilient flesh, bones, organs, and Dantians 269 321.
- His transformed body bears a subtle fiery intent that cleanses him and resists outside intrusion 323.
Personality
Meng Yuan combines a plainspoken, outwardly honest manner with careful calculation. He studies unfamiliar terrain, reads people well, uses relationships pragmatically, and prefers to handle problems quietly when possible 7 86. Ying RuShi considers upright people with schemes—like Meng Yuan—especially difficult to deal with 109.
He is intensely loyal to those who aid him, particularly Ying RuShi, Nie Yannian, and the household that took him in. He repays favors materially and directly: he frees Sister Hua from the brothel, offers her brother work, and continues to protect the people he considers family 53 114 226.
His loyalty does not prevent ruthlessness. Meng Yuan kills enemies who threaten his allies or endanger Songhe Prefecture, plans his fights around available resources, and accepts backlash or bodily harm when decisive force is needed 118 165 255. He nevertheless distinguishes this from cruelty toward the weak and rejects coercion as contrary to his own principles 350.
Abilities & Skills
Essence Flame, Body Tempering, and Star Fire
Meng Yuan's defining foundation is the Essence Flame, which continually restores and refines his body. Repeated tempering grants him enormous endurance, rapid recovery, unusually strong Jade Liquid, and resistance to mental or physical interference.
- His Dantians are vastly larger than those of comparable martial artists and produce exceptionally dense Jade Liquid 99 269.
- His body withstands techniques that target muscles, bones, internal organs, and the mind better than most opponents of his rank 131 269.
- He can recover Jade Liquid at an extraordinary rate even after exhausting both Dantians 321.
- Star Fire can remove poison and foreign corruption from others; its transformative nature also makes Meng Yuan difficult to kill so long as a spark of vitality remains 370.
- Body tempering is painful and repeatedly destroys his clothing, but every completed refinement improves his physical and spiritual resilience 310 330.
Saber Combat and Proving Dao Blade
Meng Yuan trains in the Gale Wind Saber Technique and develops into a highly capable saber fighter whose combat style emphasizes timing, pressure, and decisive killing blows.
- Defeats Ren Debiao in a saber duel while initially holding back, then breaks his arm when forced to respond 48.
- Uses saber aura alongside Heavenly Mystery Divine Powers against stronger opponents 196.
- His saber becomes the vehicle for his strongest later techniques, rather than merely a conventional weapon 195.
- Proving Dao Blade absorbs the fire of ten thousand people and destroys Qing Guangzi's Buddha Nature, Buddha Heart, Buddha Bone, and Dao-seeking hearts 397.
Floating Light Cave Heaven
A Demon Suppression Division Heavenly Mystery Divine Power and Meng Yuan's early signature killing move.
- Learns it after entering the Seventh Rank and opening the Hidden Chambers 100 105.
- Its force scales with Meng Yuan's unusually vast Dantians and dense Jade Liquid 105 137.
- Uses successive activations from both Dantians to overwhelm and kill Yang Yuping 165.
- Kills a Sixth Rank Elder White Ape and later employs the technique against multiple powerful opponents 103 260.
- Heavy use can drain his Jade Liquid and tear his Dantians 312 321.
Mist Rain Flying Rainbow and Myriad Stream Light
Meng Yuan uses these movement-oriented Heavenly Mystery Divine Powers for pursuit, evasion, and tactical positioning.
- Mist Rain Flying Rainbow is a two-stage technique linked to Kidney Water, Lung Metal, and the Stone Gate Acupoint 124.
- He uses Mist Rain Flying Rainbow to evade Qie Yisheng and later to escape while injured 196 248.
- Myriad Stream Light is a high-speed movement method obtained from the Vajra Deer 74.
- He uses Myriad Stream Light to escape Qie Yisheng and to carry the wounded Dugu Ying back into Peaceful Prefecture 196 305.
Heart Burning and Divine Might Like Prison
These techniques bolster Meng Yuan's mental stability and control over enemies.
- Heart Burning burns away distracting thoughts, breaks mental restraints, and helps him resist illusion and thought-planting techniques 145 196.
- Divine Might Like Prison locks onto an opponent's vital energy, instills fear, and is most effective against weaker targets 110.
- Divine Might Like Prison can be countered by superior Dharma forms or stronger techniques; Elder Zhu turns its binding energy back on Meng Yuan 255.
Bodhi Extinguishing Dao and Heavenly God Descent
Meng Yuan employs these high-risk methods against opponents beyond his ordinary limits.
- Bodhi Extinguishing Dao is a powerful offensive Heavenly Mystery Divine Power taught by Monk Jue Ming 206.
- He uses it to escape Qie Yisheng, but suffers severe backlash from repeated activation 248.
- Combined with Heavenly God Descent, it badly wounds Lian Nu despite her Fifth Rank Buddhist cultivation and lotus-based Dharma form 255.
- Its repeated use clouds his mental clarity and requires restraint despite its battlefield effectiveness 248 315.
Other Heavenly Mystery Divine Powers
- Blossoming Spring Thunder — an internal attack that targets the heart, muscles, bones, and organs rather than relying on brute force 131.
- Nirvana Return to Heaven — a life-risking technique that forces out Meng Yuan's potential but leaves lasting consequences 195.
- Indestructible Golden Body — a defensive technique whose strength depends on the user's own body and Jade Liquid; Meng Yuan acquires its map but must meet its Upper Thirty-Three Heavens requirements 137 184.
