Background and History

Xiang Ling lived around Big Head Mountain and Old Turtle Pit under the care of her Roe Deer spirit godmother, Flower Granny. After discovering a hidden Treasure Tree bearing two fruits, Xiang Ling and her godmother concealed it; Xiang Ling was named the “Grand Inspector of Big Head Mountain” while her godmother returned to her hometown. Xiang Ling intended to use one fruit as a dowry for marrying into a wealthy family. 40

She sought out Meng Yuan to repay him for saving her life. When the Fox Matchmaker tried to seize the Treasure Tree’s fruit, Xiang Ling helped Meng Yuan despite being frightened: she retrieved the great medicine, sought help, and later headbutted the old fox to break the pressure of her secret technique. After Meng Yuan killed the fox, Xiang Ling gave him a Green Fruit and treasured the stone on which he carved her name beside her godmother’s. 38 41 42

The Green Fruit improved Xiang Ling’s constitution. According to her godmother’s teachings, it would sharpen her mind, improve her memory, let her learn to read, and help her transform more quickly. She subsequently asked Meng Yuan to bring her books, began attending school, and devoted herself to poetry. 43 65 75

Xiang Ling established the Old Turtle Pit Poetry Club and became its president. She wrote several poems a day, taught poetry to others around the mountain, exchanged poems and letters with friends, and eventually kept her own poetry collection. 75 83 107 237

Meng Yuan brought her to the Royal Residence, where Ying RuShi accepted her as a junior relative through Daoist connections and agreed to guide her poetry studies. Xiang Ling became a Tranquil Garden Attendant, handling errands and correspondence while continuing to study and earn money. 109 110 138

After Qing Zhi Xian killed Sister-in-law Pig and abducted Xiang Ling, Meng Yuan pursued her immediately. Xiang Ling later sheltered with Meng Yuan in Madam Yan’s former residence, guarded him through the snow, and helped him recover from the mental aftermath of Bodhi Extinguishing Dao. 241 248 249

She later moved to the Capital, where she became Chief Manager of the Toad Palace. She intended to save enough money to buy a large home, return to Big Head Mountain in glory, and become a Poetry Immortal. 188 274

Xiang Ling is a small brown weasel spirit with a white belly, a moist black nose, round eyes, and short forelimbs. She is highly conscious of her appearance and treats headscarves, cloth flowers, and bags as essential signs of fashion. 39 106

Xiang Ling is talkative, impulsive, and easily distracted, often delivering her godmother’s unusual life lessons with complete seriousness. She can be naïve about worldly matters, but she is not helpless: she notices details, values manners, and takes pride in being capable. 40 108 121

She is deeply affectionate toward her godmother, Meng Yuan, and her few close friends. Although she fears death, she still acted against the Fox Matchmaker to save Meng Yuan and later kept watch over him while he was injured and mentally unstable. 42 249

Xiang Ling is practical beneath her whimsical manner. She saves money, records expenses, seeks paid work, and treats business as a serious undertaking. She also has a persistent habit of matchmaking both people and animals. 175 184 189
