The two ugly stone gargoyles at the entrance said nothing upon seeing Amosta and Minerva, merely turning aside in silence.

Pulling open the trapdoor, the two entered the spiral staircase one after the other.

The Headmaster's office, which had been left riddled with scars by the great battle, had returned to its former appearance. Exquisite murals covered the lofty white dome, while the candles on the huge hanging chandelier burned quietly, dispelling the gloom cast into the room.

It was as though nothing had changed.

The bookshelves lining both walls were still crammed with a dazzling array of magical books. On the shelf behind the slender-legged desk, the Sorting Hat and the portraits of former headmasters watched in silence as the office welcomed a new master once more.

In truth, however, some changes had taken place.

The brazier and golden perch that had once stood in the center of the office were gone, along with their owner.

Phoenixes were fiercely loyal magical creatures; they would not serve a second master.

The alchemical instruments that had once been scattered throughout the office, constantly producing strange sounds, had also been removed, making the Headmaster's office seem somewhat more spacious.

Amosta and Minerva walked up to the desk in turn, lifted their heads, and gazed at the portraits.

The portraits all rose to their feet, removed their wizarding hats, and paid their respects to Amosta—save for one exception.

At the end of the row of portraits, Dumbledore's newly created portrait slept peacefully within its frame.

Staring at the old man with his silver-white beard and hair, Minerva blew her nose heavily, the sound filled with grief.

"He had no regrets left when he departed, Minerva—"

Amosta turned around and gently patted Minerva's shoulder.

"I know, Amosta—"
