History
Hogwarts was founded roughly a thousand years ago by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Although the founders came from prominent pure-blood families, they established the school to widen magical education beyond family inheritance and admit talented Muggle-born children. 1023 1201
The founders originally charged tuition, but waived it for Muggle-born children who could not afford it. Public backlash led them to abolish tuition for all students and personally fund the school. After the other founders died, Helga Hufflepuff became Hogwarts’ first Headmistress and exhausted her family fortune maintaining it. 1023
A later Headmaster reinstated tuition, which again restricted magical education largely to pure-blood families and wealthy Muggle descendants. In the third century after Hogwarts’ founding, a Muggle-born Headmaster sought funding from prominent families and created the Board of Governors in exchange for authority over the school. 1023
Over time, the Board curtailed expensive magical instruction, reviewed teaching materials, sought to limit Muggle-born admissions, and gained the right to appoint or dismiss the Headmaster under Ministry supervision. 1023
Amosta Breen later pursued Hogwarts’ separation from the Board, arguing that the school required independent industries and funding before it could discard the Board’s control. He subsequently brought more than twenty carriages of gold to fund school operations, professor salaries, the Triwizard Tournament final, and payments to Hogsmeade villagers. 500 501 1030
Campus
Castle and Grounds
Hogwarts is an ancient castle beside the Black Lake and near the Forbidden Forest. Its internal structure contains many remote corridors, concealed routes, and chambers accumulated across a millennium. 22 229 1352
Deep beneath the castle lies a hidden chamber containing a cavern several times the size of a Quidditch pitch. Its massive stone pillars resemble Hogwarts’ own structure and appear to function as load-bearing supports for the castle. 87 88
- Great Hall — central gathering space used for feasts, school announcements, visiting delegations, and Triwizard Tournament ceremonies. 497 504 553
- Headmaster’s Office — contains the portraits of former Headmasters and later displays the four founders’ artifacts: Gryffindor’s sword, Slytherin’s locket, Ravenclaw’s diadem, and Hufflepuff’s cup. 321 1153
- Black Lake — site of the staff-created ice castle and home to the Giant Squid, which assists in Hogwarts’ defense during the Holy War. 707 1352
- Forbidden Forest — regularly restricted for safety, tournament preparations, and security operations. 1040
- Secret passages — Filch knew of four routes leading outside the castle, but Breen concluded that many more could exist due to Hogwarts’ age and the actions of generations of students. 228 229
Ice Castle
During the Triwizard Tournament period, Dumbledore and Breen created a second castle of Transfigured ice on the Black Lake. Other staff decorated it with house animals, a silver fountain, magical creatures, fairies, and ghosts. 707
The structure contained a warm Great Hall lit by fiery house crests and an immense chandelier made from diamond-shaped ice blocks. 708
Governance and Funding
| Period | Arrangement | Consequences |
|---|---|---|
| Founding era | The four founders jointly governed and financed Hogwarts. | Tuition was eventually abolished for all students. 1023 |
| Post-founders era | Helga Hufflepuff maintained the school with her personal and family wealth. | Hogwarts remained open, but Hufflepuff died in relative poverty. 1023 |
| Board of Governors era | Wealthy families funded Hogwarts in return for institutional authority. | The Board controlled costs, influenced admissions, and obtained power over Headmaster appointments. 1023 |
| Breen’s reforms | Hogwarts separated from the Board and received major independent funding. | School operations, staff salaries, tournament funding, and student opportunities were expanded. 1030 |
Hogwarts does not charge its students tuition, though students must obtain personal school supplies such as robes, wands, cauldrons, telescopes, and textbooks. The school’s principal expenses include feeding nearly a thousand students and acquiring magical materials for instruction. 1022
Education
Hogwarts teaches conventional magical subjects as well as practical combat instruction. Under Breen, dueling was taught as a flexible application of three broad categories: offensive, defensive, and utility magic. 512
- Offensive magic — spells intended to render an opponent unable to resist, including explosive, cutting, burning, piercing, binding, petrifying, disarming, and gravity-based effects. 512
- Defensive magic — spells used to block, avoid, or survive hostile magic. 512
- Utility magic — non-direct attacks that create obstacles, impair enemies, or enable escape; Breen uses the example of grounding, stunning, and blinding a Fire Dragon rather than attempting to overpower it. 512
Breen also promotes physical education and intends to broaden Hogwarts’ curriculum through exchanges with intelligent magical beings. Planned participants include goblins, centaurs, giants, werewolves, vampires, and house-elves. 376 1193
Hermione Granger’s Society for the Protection of Magical Creatures’ Rights later draws nearly a hundred young wizards to weekly meetings and teaches basic magic to magical creatures and non-wizard students near the riverbank. 1277
Security
Hogwarts’ security has required constant adaptation because of its age, hidden passages, and repeated external threats.
- Breen designed a surveillance system intended to cover all non-private areas of the castle while excluding classrooms, common rooms, dormitories, and bathrooms. 22
- Concealed Panoramic Telescopes were used to monitor the Triwizard Tournament’s Goblet of Fire registration area without detection. 558
- During Sirius Black’s escape, known secret exits were sealed, but the discovery of another passage revealed that the castle’s routes were not fully catalogued. 228 229
- During later attacks connected to Voldemort, students avoided traveling alone through the castle’s darker areas. 1302
Major Events
Triwizard Tournament
Hogwarts successfully passed review to host the revived Triwizard Tournament, receiving delegations from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The castle was decorated with house banners and a large Hogwarts crest for their arrival. 417 553
Breen delivered the welcoming address and announced that House Cup Quidditch matches would be suspended because of the major tournament event beginning in October. 504
Hogwarts Holy War
Avalon descended toward Hogwarts, threatening to crush the castle and surrounding region. Dumbledore, Breen, and Grindelwald supported the falling island with pillars of earth, water, fire, and sand while the school organized an evacuation and defense. 1348 1349
The castle was attacked by magical beasts, Death Eaters, goblins, Giants, and other hostile forces. Students, staff, ghosts, house-elves, centaurs, goblins, and outside reinforcements fought together to protect Hogwarts. 1350 1351 1355
Hogwarts suffered extreme damage: Ravenclaw Tower collapsed, the grounds were cratered, the Black Lake dried up, and magical beasts occupied the castle. 1393
Reconstruction and Avalon Assessment
After the war, Amosta restored Hogwarts in less than a minute using soul power, returning the castle to its former form and sending the remaining magical beasts to Avalon. 1393
He also created a path from the Whomping Willow to the Isle of Avalon. Students must traverse the path and kill at least one ranked magical beast to graduate, with stronger beasts earning higher scores. 1393
