Ch. 1243A Shared Fate

After destroying another of Tom's Horcruxes and seeing Ariana, Dumbledore learned that Salazar Slytherin had bound the Resurrection Stone to protect his bloodline. Amosta realized Slytherin had left him further clues, and the two prepared to part as Amosta pursued other matters.

  • Amosta tossed the rune-bound Resurrection Stone onto the table, and Dumbledore reflected on seeing Ariana and on Slytherin's safeguard.
  • Dumbledore asked whether Amosta needed the Stone and realized its binding might require him to keep Tom alive.
  • Amosta explained that Slytherin wanted more than Tom's survival and recalled the founder's hints about Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, and the Sword of Gryffindor.
  • Dumbledore considered the burdens Amosta had taken on and regretted that he could no longer use the Stone to let Aberforth see Ariana.
  • Amosta and Dumbledore agreed to part ways, and Dumbledore handed him the Resurrection Stone as Amosta said he had other matters to attend to.

Ch. 1244Snow House (I)

Jasna woke injured in a Muggle’s remote cabin after surviving the battle, and tried to determine who had rescued her and how much time had passed. She opened the cabin door to find a world buried in wind and snow.

  • Jasna regained consciousness in bed, remembered the battle, and concluded that neither the Aurors nor her father’s Death Eaters had likely saved her.
  • Jasna slowly recovered enough strength to sit up and inspected the small pine cabin, its supplies, and the Muggle belongings inside.
  • Jasna found her broken wand beneath the bedding and saw that her right foot had been splinted and bandaged.
  • Jasna used the table to support herself as she climbed out of bed and looked through the window at the snow outside.
  • Jasna opened the cabin door, and wind and snow rushed in.

Ch. 1245Snow House (II)

Jasna woke in a snowbound Muggle cabin after the old man who lived there rescued her from a river. Injured and wary, she tried to leave by Apparition, but the old man offered her dried fish as she struggled to gather her magic.

  • Jasna watched the old Muggle chop wood and learned he had saved her after he nodded in response to her question.
  • The old Muggle told Jasna he had found her in the river, and she wondered whether her father had survived the battle at Oxta.
  • Jasna thanked the old Muggle, asked about her missing gold and robe, and promised to send him gold once she reached safety.
  • Jasna rejected the boiled potatoes and tried to prepare for Apparition despite her injured leg, while the old Muggle offered her dried fish.

Ch. 1246Snow House (III)

Jasna discovered that an Anti-Apparition Charm trapped her in a remote mountain cabin, leaving her stranded without a working wand or contact with her father. She remained injured and dependent on a taciturn old Muggle as a blizzard prevented her from reaching a town, and she faced waiting for the German Ministry of Magic to lift its lockdown.

  • Jasna failed to Apparate and realized an Anti-Apparition Charm blocked her from leaving the area.
  • Jasna suspected the German Ministry of Magic had sealed the mountains while searching for survivors of the Oxta incident.
  • Jasna asked the old Muggle to take her to the nearest town, offering him money, but he refused because of the snow.
  • The old Muggle went outside to sharpen his axe and chop wood while Jasna considered ways to escape.
  • Jasna concluded that Muggle methods were safer than magic but could not risk traveling through the blizzard with her injured leg.

Ch. 1247House of Snow (4)

Jasna woke after dreaming of Aurors and remained stranded in the old Muggle’s cabin, uncertain whether her father had survived. After he cared for her injuries and fed her, she learned that he already knew she was a witch.

  • Jasna woke from a dream of Aurors and realized night had fallen while she slept in the old Muggle’s cabin.
  • Jasna noticed that the old Muggle had straightened her splints, covered her with blankets, and caught fish to make her soup.
  • Jasna ate the fish soup and thanked the old Muggle, but he ignored her offer of gold and questions about his name.
  • Jasna told the old Muggle that she was a witch, and he calmly replied that he knew.

Ch. 1248Snow House (V)

Jasna waited for Old Enma to return, then crossed the frozen river to seek help from the villagers. She told them she had come from Berlin and claimed she had heard there were wizards in the village.

  • Jasna recalled how Old Enma had once confirmed that he knew about wands, but had not explained how he knew about wizards.
  • Worried that Old Enma had been gone for half a day, Jasna left the cabin and struggled through the snow to the river.
  • Jasna crawled across the slippery frozen river and approached the villagers clearing a path.
  • The villagers recognized Old Enma's coat and questioned Jasna about her connection to him.
  • Jasna said she was from Berlin, had been trapped by the heavy snow, and had come because she heard there were wizards in the village.

Ch. 1249Snow House (VI)

Jasna questioned the villagers about wizards and learned that Old Enma had been a medic in World War II. She asked for help reaching a town so she could return to Berlin, but the villagers warned that the winter route was too dangerous, leaving her seemingly stranded until spring.

  • Jasna showed the villagers her broken wand and claimed she was a professor investigating whether it was a wizard's tool, but they insisted there were no wizards in the village.
  • The villagers explained that Old Enma had returned from the Battle of Berlin as a taciturn veteran and had served as an army medic.
  • Jasna realized Old Enma might have witnessed wizards fighting during the war, which had involved the magical world and been tied to Gellert Grindelwald.
  • Jasna asked the freckle-faced young man and the villagers to take her to a nearby town so she could return to work in Berlin.
  • The brown-bearded man and the others warned that reaching town meant crossing a forest, mountains, and a frozen lake amid avalanches, snow, and dangerous animals.
  • Jasna considered that her injured leg and the winter conditions might force her to remain in the village until spring.

Ch. 1250Snow House (VII)

Jasna struggled to imagine a future without her father or a cause to serve, until Old Enma returned with a reindeer and she helped prepare it. As they cooked, Old Enma challenged her belief that Grindelwald had fought for wizarding freedom, saying he had pursued his own ambitions.

  • Jasna wondered how she could live if her father was dead and rejected both serving Voldemort and rebuilding her father's movement.
  • Old Enma returned to the house dragging a gutted, skinned reindeer on a sled, and Jasna eagerly helped bring it inside.
  • Jasna used magic to help butcher the reindeer and then took over cooking the venison when Old Enma nearly burned it.
  • Jasna praised Grindelwald as a leader who had fought for wizarding freedom, but Old Enma said wizards had always been free and Muggles were not inferior.
  • Old Enma told Jasna that Grindelwald had not fought for wizarding freedom but had pursued his own ambitions.

Ch. 1251Snow House (VIII)

Jasna settled into a peaceful routine with Old Enma, finding joy in practicing magic and helping with their work. She still feared the Aurors might find her and make Old Enma forget her, while Old Enma explained that he stayed alone to atone for the people he had killed.

  • Jasna argued that Grindelwald had nearly fulfilled his promise, but Old Enma said he had only killed.
  • Jasna used repeated wandless Cutting Charms to prepare venison, then proudly demonstrated the spell by slicing off a corner of a table.
  • Old Enma watched Jasna sleep and softened as she rested in the cabin.
  • Over the following weeks, Jasna helped Old Enma split logs, catch fish, smoke food, and modify his sled with her Cutting Charm.
  • Jasna worried that Aurors would capture her and erase Old Enma's memories, then asked why he would not move away.
  • Old Enma told Jasna he needed to atone for the killing he had once done.

Ch. 1252House of Snow (End)

Jasna prepared to leave the mountain village with Old Enma, who had turned their repaired sled into a warm carriage and gathered dogs for the journey. As the carriage set off, Jasna said goodbye in her heart to the snow house and the life she had shared there.

  • Jasna woke before dawn and realized Old Enma had packed the cabin’s supplies and belongings onto their sled.
  • Jasna saw that Old Enma had made a tent from reindeer hide and fitted it over the sled as a carriage.
  • Old Enma harnessed sled dogs he had borrowed from the village and finished preparing the carriage for the trip to town.
  • Jasna ate her final breakfast in the cabin, while Old Enma extinguished the fire and helped her into the carriage.
  • Old Enma set off toward the frozen river, and Jasna watched the snow house recede as she said goodbye in her heart.

Ch. 1253On the Road

Jasna traveled with Old Enma across the frozen wilderness, recovering enough to help feed the exhausted sled dogs. When Old Enma recognized that White Fur Snow was approaching, he led the sleigh to shelter beneath a rocky hill.

  • Jasna woke aboard the sleigh and learned from Old Enma that their journey would take about three days.
  • Jasna asked Old Enma to rest the exhausted sled dogs, then used her power to cut holes in the ice and helped the dogs catch fish.
  • Jasna rejoiced as each sled dog received fish, and Old Enma watched her with a softened expression.
  • Old Enma noticed the approaching White Fur Snow and steered the sleigh off the frozen river toward a rocky hill.
  • Old Enma secured the sleigh, brought the dogs into the carriage, and sealed the curtains as White Fur Snow arrived.

Ch. 1254The Price

Jasna and Old Enma endured a deadly blizzard while Jasna reconsidered her hostility toward Muggles and accepted that she must pay for her crimes. After the storm passed, Jasna woke to find Old Enma and the sled dogs outside, and a gunshot sounded as she crawled out of the cabin.

  • The blizzard battered the sled, and Jasna feared that she and Old Enma would die as the cabin filled with darkness and cold.
  • Old Enma reassured Jasna and held her hand while she blamed herself and asked whether they would survive.
  • Jasna said she no longer hated Muggles as much, rejected wizard supremacy, and acknowledged that she must pay for her crimes.
  • After the blizzard ended, Jasna woke to find Old Enma tending the stove and later realized he and the sled dogs had left the cabin.
  • Jasna crawled toward the rear of the cabin, and a thunderous gunshot rang out.

Ch. 1255Considerate Amosta

Jasna and Old Enma were trapped in a snow pit by a pack of more than forty wolves, and Jasna used a Cutting Charm to wound one while they prepared to escape with the sled. Amosta appeared nearby, realized Old Enma’s silver-eyed gaze had revealed him, and watched in concealment as they faced the wolves.

  • Jasna climbed out of the snow pit and found Old Enma guarding her and the sled dogs against a large wolf pack.
  • Old Enma shot two wolves, while Jasna wounded an old wolf with a wandless Cutting Charm that made the pack retreat briefly.
  • Jasna and Old Enma decided to pull up the sled and unload the carriage while the wolves waited for an opening.
  • A gunshot sounded from deeper in the forest, and Old Enma told Jasna to hurry because they were running out of time.
  • Amosta appeared unseen, read information from the silver gleam in Old Enma’s eyes, and stayed concealed to observe the confrontation.

Ch. 1256True Nature

Jasna and Old Enma escaped the snow wolves’ encirclement by driving their sled onto a frozen river, but the pack pursued them and attacked the cabin. Old Enma killed the wolves that leapt aboard, while Jasna saw more wolves closing in on both sides.

  • Jasna harnessed the sled dogs as Old Enma held the snow wolves back with his hunting rifle.
  • Jasna and Old Enma charged the pack, then veered onto the frozen river and began a chase with the wolves.
  • A snow wolf jumped into the cabin, and Old Enma shot it through the fur covering.
  • Old Enma used his unloaded rifle to stab a second wolf in the eye, then reloaded and killed it with a shot.
  • Jasna spotted more snow wolves closing in on both sides of the sled.

Ch. 1257The Journey's End (Part One)

Jasna and Old Enma fought to escape a pack of snow wolves, but the wolves overturned their sled and left them surrounded. As the pack leapt in to kill them, silver light burst from Old Enma’s eyes and a young, steady voice called, “Enough—”

  • Jasna’s Cutting Charms and Old Enma’s hunting rifle held off the snow wolves, but the rifle barrel overheated and their damaged sled began to slow.
  • The alpha wolf signaled the pack to attack the exhausted sled dogs, and the wolves drove the sled onto a frozen lake.
  • The pack surged at once, overturned the sled, and crushed several wolves and sled dogs beneath it.
  • Old Enma cushioned Jasna during the crash, but he suffered severe internal injuries as the wolves killed the remaining sled dogs.
  • Old Enma fired his final shot to save Jasna from a leaping wolf, then silver light burst from his eyes as the pack closed in and he said, “Enough—”

Ch. 1258The Journey's End (Part 2)

Amosta Breen found Jasna and prepared to arrest her for her crimes, while Enma stood by her despite learning she was a wizarding criminal. Jasna accepted that she would face life imprisonment and asked for one last meal with Enma before she left.

  • Amosta’s magical field stopped Jasna’s Cutting Charm, and Enma stood between her and the wizard.
  • Jasna told Amosta she deserved punishment and asked whether her father was still alive; Amosta said he had received no news of his death.
  • Amosta explained that Jasna would likely receive life imprisonment, and he refused Enma’s demand to let her go.
  • Jasna asked Amosta to spare Enma’s memories of her, and he agreed.
  • Jasna gathered potatoes and fish, borrowed Amosta’s wand, and began preparing potato fish stew with Enma.

Ch. 1259The Last Supper

Jasna shared a final meal with Amosta and Old Enma, then asked Amosta to help Enma build a house and arranged to donate her wealth. As Amosta prepared to escort her to prison, he knocked Jasna unconscious and confronted Old Enma, whose eyes turned clear and silver as their clash erupted across the frozen lake.

  • Jasna, Amosta, and Old Enma ate fish soup together on the frozen lake.
  • Jasna urged Enma to live with the villagers and asked Amosta to help him build a house, offering her Gringotts wealth for the task and to support Diagon Alley’s reconstruction.
  • Amosta explained that good behavior might eventually earn Jasna parole or a reduced sentence, and Jasna said she still wanted to donate her gold.
  • Jasna embraced Enma, took the hide blanket, and asked Amosta to make sure Enma got home safely after escorting her to prison.
  • Amosta suddenly unleashed a crushing aura that knocked Jasna unconscious, then confronted Enma as the old man’s eyes cleared and two blazing spheres of light appeared above the frozen lake.

Ch. 1260Out of Control (Part One)

Amosta and Grindelwald ended their devastating magical clash, and Grindelwald left after asking Amosta to care for Jasna. At Malfoy Manor, Vitia noticed the gray mist growing more dangerous and went to meet Voldemort for an unusual dinner, where she encountered Severus.

  • Amosta asked Grindelwald if he had calmed down, and Grindelwald told him to settle Jasna properly before leaving on his own.
  • Amosta left the ruined lake with the unconscious Jasna and vanished into the mountains.
  • Vitia used life magic to revive a vine, but the gray mist quickly withered it and crept toward her through their magical link.
  • Vitia accepted Voldemort's invitation to dine and dressed before leaving her room.
  • Vitia met Severus at the manor entrance and greeted him.

Ch. 1261Out of Control (Part Two)

Vitia attended a dinner with Voldemort and his Death Eaters, where Severus Snape arrived after meeting Amosta Breen and Voldemort seated Vitia beside him. When Voldemort demanded news after his defeat, the Death Eaters’ weak progress left him furious.

  • Severus Snape arrived at the dining room and told Voldemort that Amosta Breen had returned to Hogwarts to speak with him.
  • Voldemort seated Vitia beside himself, surprising the Death Eaters and provoking Bellatrix Lestrange’s hostility.
  • Voldemort’s guests followed his lead at dinner, while Vitia avoided the bloody steak.
  • Greengrass reported that he could not reach senior Ministry officials, and Voldemort forced him to his knees.
  • Rosier and Yaxley reported that Wizard Weekly would publish an article attacking Amosta Breen and revoke his Most Charming Smile Award.
  • Voldemort concluded that his defeat had been complete, just as Amosta Breen had claimed.

Ch. 1262Out of Control (Part 2)

Voldemort confronted the Death Eaters over their fear of Amosta Breen and heard that Breen had captured Jasna Vogel. He planned to strike back at Breen and demonstrate Voldemort’s power, while the rescued Oxta prisoners waited outside Britain.

  • Voldemort mocked the Death Eaters for hesitating to oppose Breen, whose policies threatened their wealth and operations.
  • Severus told Voldemort that Amosta Breen had found and arrested Jasna Vogel near Oxta.
  • Adam Vogel explained that Jasna had survived Oxta’s collapse but could not escape because her wand was broken and the area was sealed.
  • Adam told Voldemort that the prisoners rescued from Oxta had been settled at one of his former bases and pledged to fight for him.
  • Adam warned that Britain’s tight border security made it difficult for the prisoners to enter the country.
  • Voldemort said he planned to teach Breen a lesson and show others how terrifying Voldemort was.
